Sand gets way to hot to walk on it, so don't go in flip flops... I burned my feet!! This is a great point for photographers. I had a lot fun and took many great shots! Spotted some brave souls walking into the dunes!... aghh... it was way too hot for us!

This place is amazing day or night, but moreso at night and with a full moon. This was our favorite place in the park, a must visit...perhaps twice!

I expected more from what i had read. But, then again, if you have been in the Taklamakin desert it couldn't compare. Then again you can get a cold beer and bee in civilization in short order.

If you want to go to a really nice place in Death Valley, away from the tourists, check out Eureka Dunes in the very north of the park. It's a dirt road to get there, but in March 2012 it was just graded and we made it fine in our Prius. There is a campground with picnic tables, fire pits and a pit toilet (bring your own TP). The dunes are the second highest in the US and are fun to climb. There are other canyons and dunes nearby where you can hike.

The Mesquite Dunes by Stovepipe are beautiful too, but the height (700') of the Eureka dunes is stunning. We hiked to the top (tough), then on the way back down triggered sand slides that made the incredible low humming sound these dunes are famous for.

TIP: Protect your camera in a tight zip-lock bag! Sand and cameras don' mix.

The road down from Big Pine is excellent, street vehicles will be fine. We came from Scotty's Castle, and that road is pretty washboardy though not nearly so bad as Racetrack. There is also a section up near the mine that is pretty steep and 4WD is nice.
