The Oasis at Death Valley
Reviewed March 20, 2013

We stayed at Furnace Creek Ranch for 3 nights in Death Valley. It is older but very clean and quiet. The reason I didn't give it an excellent rating is that there was not good lighting in the parking lot, so it was difficult to see, and there wasn't an elevator to haul your stuff upstairs which could be a problem for some folks. It is in a great location, they have a beautiful pool area, and everything you need is on location, plus it is so much more reasonable than Furnace Crk Inn, which is really old but beautiful. Go there for dinner instead! There are also two really good restaurants on the property (49'er Cafe & Corkscrew Saloon), a little museum and a post office. We were able to walk across the property, about a 1/2 mile to the Visitor's center. The entire resort was really neat and we'd love to go back.

We were reluctant to go to Death Valley at all, as no one we knew had ever been. Well, we had an amazing time. The hotel was clean and comfortable. It was not luxurious despite the price (no marble bathrooms and crystal chandeliers), but was certainly well appointed and satisfactory. The location was central to many of the attractions in Death Valley, and the staff was extremely pleasant. The pool was the real treat: 85 degrees consistently, spring fed, and very relaxing. Many people to whom we spoke said this is the best pool anywhere, and I am sure it ranks up there. The restaurant was good, not amazing, but certainly enjoyable. However, a bit over-priced for what it was. The restaurant at the ranch was much more economical and kid-friendly. The ranch is probably better for families, but my kids certainly fit in at the hotel (we did hush them a bit at the pool so the adults could relax in peace; there is a larger kid friendly pool at the ranch also).

We stayed at the Ranch and our room was located along the golf course. The property includes a few restaurants (which tend to be packed anytime after sunset on the weekends), a gas station, general store/gift shop, bike rentals and I'm sure a few things I'm forgetting. We ate at the cafe because the saloon was full. Unfortunately the cafe was nearly full as well and the servers all seemed stressed out. Our food came out quickly but, our server never asked how anything was she just gave us our checks after the head chef cleared our plates without saying anything to us. Otherwise, my experience at the ranch was a good one. I was allowed to check in 3hrs early, our rooms were comfortable, and for the most part, everyone was very nice.

What a fabulous location with unbeatable views, a stunning spring-water pool (water constantly 85 degreesF) and charming rooms. The Furnace Creek Inn doesn't have much competition but the hotel itself is great. However the restaurant is poor - we had crab cakes with very little crab, chicken which was overcooked and creme brulee that had separated - and all overpriced. And breakfast is not cheap either - not a question of affordability but one of very poor value for money (accepting that transportation costs of bringing food into Death Valley will be high). Having said that, the other accomodation in the area, although significantly cheaper, is not up to much if you are looking to spoil yourselves a bit. So, accept the food and soak up the atmosphere, the views and the unique character of the place.

We spent a night in the cabins on March 10, 2013. This centrally located Death Valley facility is clean, quiet and in a great location. The grounds are great to walk around including the outside museum grounds with a lot of historic displays from the mining history of the park, there are restaurants (although quite busy at dinner time some plan accordingly) and a pool we would of like to of tried. The chairs on the front porch were a great touch to sit outside and enjoy the evenings or make new friends. The check in/out process was efficient and easy. The price is high but based on location and lack of competition, they still do a good job to keep people happy.

Furnace Creek Inn and Ranch Resort has the expensive Inn and the less expensive Ranch from which to choose. We have always chosen the Ranch because of its more moderate pricing and its grounds. It is more family-oriented, has a large pool, a few place to eat and many other amenities. The rooms are basic motel style, but large and functional. The housekeeping staff does an excellent job of keeping things neat and clean. Considering how few places there are to stay in Death Valley itself, the Ranch is the best option. We were told that the summer is the busiest time because more foreign tourists come at that time, so plan in advance for reservations.

If you want to stay right in Death Valley with easy access to hiking and all the sights, this is the place. The standard ranch rooms are clean, spare, right near the action. Get a first floor room to have a patio with rocking chairs and think about the evening exposure-- west or south if you want the sun, east or north if its going to be blazing hot. The fresh water swimming pool is awesome.
