“Good Choice in Death Valley”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2013

Review is for the "Ranch" Hubby and I recently stayed here (first time) for the Death Valley marathon/half/10k... As a result of heavy traffic from LA, we arrived fairly late 10:30 pm. The guy at check in counter was very nice, check in was fast. As we drove to our building, we were surprised by how vastness of the property - it was dark so really couldn't make out anything. We were in the last building, parking was really full so we had to walk a bit of distance to get to our building - but it was a nice evening with bright - beautiful stars and had been sitting for awhile so didn't mind. There were no elevators so we had to carry our luggage upto the 2nd floor - only packed for over night so again not a big deal. Our room was decent sized and clean, had a flat screen tv and fridge. The small balcony had two rocking chairs - it would have been wonderful to sit out and star gaze - but needed to get to bed to wake up early for the race. The beds and multiple pillows were comfortable and there was absolutely no noise. We did request a wake up call which never came (but alarm on phone did work). The drapes for the window really did a good job of blocking out light - when we pulled them back around 6:30am it was already daylight outside. In the morning we were able to see what exactly we missed in the evening. Just to the left of our balcony was the golf course, As we walked out the building into the parking lot, we saw the horse stables, saw the tennis courts and the borax museum and all the restaurants/shops. After the race (which was great), we decided to eat lunch at the property and decided on the wrangler buffet. The choices were fairly limited, and the food was ok, the food was refilled quickly. We also walked through the borax museum, which had an interior and outside section. We also took a look at the pool area ( which is feed from warm underground spring water) which looked very nice. We wanted to do some exploring of Death Valley and were on our way. Our stay was less than 13 hours (most of it spent sleeping and running) but was pleasant. I don't think I would make a special trip just to stay here, but if coming to Death Valley this is a good option.

Room Tip: the rooms that are closer to the entrance have a much better view from balcony and no 2nd floor

The Inn is a wonderful place for couples to stay while enjoying the vistas and serenity of Death Valley. The Ranch would be my choice for families. It has a much more relaxed atmosphere and better dining options. I don't understand why people with kids choose to stay at the Inn. The rooms at the ranch have been redone and it is much more kid friendly, not to mention cheaper.
We love Furnace Creek Inn for the two of us and the rooms are historic and lovely. Too bad about the dining room there though. It could be so amazing with a good restaurant. The old chef is gone for whatever reason and the food is just awful and expensive. We always bring at least one dinner with us. Lots of options for hiking, beautiful outdoor fireplaces and amazing pool, still make it a favorite of ours.

There is not much to compare this with as its i the middle of no where, the other furnace creek resort I a told was very expensive to stay at. Anyhow the rooms were super clean and comfortable with a balcony. There is a really interesting museum within the ranch which is worth a good walk round. All in all really nice. We went on one of the horse tracking tours, there are a few t choose from and was very enjoyable, don't expect to go faster than walking though, it's not that type of horse riding, good but a little expensive but worth it if you are into horses.

Room Tip: It's free to park here

My "very good" rating is based on its location; there is not much competition!. The Ranch is very homey, rooms are comfortable although a bit dated looking. I had a "deluxe" room in the 400 building, which is a one story building close to the front. It included a little patio, which was very dirty. The table had left over peanut butter smeared on it from another guest. However, it was a nice, quiet spot to relax in the afternoon/evening. Not sure why other reviewers complain about the shower, as I found it hot and plenty forceful. The bathroom has been upgraded with granite surfaces and nice tile. Also a mini refreigerator and coffee maker, which made early morning rising (before 5:00 a.m.), bearable!

Walls are thin!!! I could hear the man next door snoring. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

3 restaurants with expensive, average food and a very well stocked store. Plenty for kids to do and very family friendly.

Visited the Furnace Creek Inn and found it to be very pretty and more upscale, but wasn't able to peek into a room. Food at the Inn was better than at the Ranch.

Over all, the Ranch is a great place to stay in Death Valley. I'll be back.

Room Tip: I'd try to get a one story, but if not, stay on the top floor, as I hear the noise from above is...

My husband and I stayed at the ranch resort for a couple of nights this month. We liked Death Valley a lot, completely different from other national parks we have been to. We found the furnace creek ranch resort lovely in terms of amenities, location and cleanliness. However it is a little overpriced.

PROS:
1. The rooms are nice and big but extremely basic.
2. There are nice facilities in the resort (golf/tennis/pool, 3 restaurants, general stores + restaurant of the furnace Inn further up the road).
3. Ideal location

CONS:
1. Expensive room (excluding the resort fees, the basic room rent isn't cheap at the ranch and it really isn't luxurious by any standard, no view for quite a few buildings, nothing is complimentary)
2. Expensive food
3. Very very thin walls and floor--we were on the second floor. I weigh less than 120 pounds and even when I walked the floors made a terrible noise. I was glad we weren't on the first floor. The lamps in our room shook whenever anyone walked anywhere in our building, closed a door with some force or ran around!

The cost is probably understandable given the fact that maintenance among other things must be rather high in a place like Death Valley. I just wish they would fix the super thin floors & walls. But for that, it is a very nice place!

Room Tip: Bldg 900 seemed the one with a best view

Death Valley is a very special place - known for is't complex geology, spectacular colors, and unbelievable beauty. The Furnace Creek Inn allows you to experience the harsh desert in a bit of luxury. The historical accommodations are quite comfortable. The amenities are are varied and impressive. The spring fed pool is a favorite. The entire staff offer professional, friendly and helpful service. Yes, it is a bit expensive compared to similar hotel properties elsewhere, but it is in the middle of Death Valley!

Then nearby Ranger Station offers an extensive amount of information about the park and all the things you can experience. There is something for everyone - hiking, horseback riding, golf, auto touring, camping, or just relaxing.

I have spent just one night in October at Furnace creek inn, finding it such a pleasant place, our room was spacious, simple but cozy, and clean, upstairs, with view on the golf track! We also had a fantastic breakast at the ranch's bar, so fifties! I hope to come back!
