“did the job!”
Reviewed October 22, 2007

We stayed at the ranch, which is the motel version of the Inn. Very limited accomodation in the desert, so a bit concerned at what to expect! Excellent price, clean rooms if a little shabby and basic, but good for the price. Good selection of restaurants to eat at, which were very nice. Good location for getting around and seeing the area. Gets very busy at checking in time, long queues!

if you want to stay at the park and pay a reasonable price & not camp -- this is it....so we stayed ..... room was small, but clean & comfy -- only complaint was noisy a/c -- property is nice -- refreshing pool, beautiful views, the steak house was excellent for dinner (and we're vegetarians, they had a very mixed selection)

We arrived late in the evening after a long day on the road. Checkin was reasonably efficient and no problems with the reservation. When we booked the two story units I had requested upper floor and nearest to the pool, and tht is exactly what we got.

Room was spacious and quiet. Initially I was concerned as a large group was sitting around one of the nearby patios . . . but they were very considerate and not at all boisterous. Plus, our balcony door was closer to keep the a/c in. Everything in the room worked just fine and the housekeeping standards were good.

Do pay attention to the signs about the towel replacement process; they follow it! But we were able to get additional towels for the pool. The pool is hot . . . I don't think they heat it, but ambient temperature is high . . . definately not a pool for lap swimming!

We only ate in the 49er cafe . . . meals were fine and prices were not bad for a National Park where you have miles to go for an alternative. Gas prices, on the other hand were exorbitant.

After the heat of the desert in August we were pleased to arrive at Furnace Creek ranch, breaking our journey between Las Vegas and Yosemite. Check in was friendly and quick and we were soon escaping the heat in our room. As other travellers have noted, the rooms may be a little dated and the air con a little noisy, but it was clean and comfortable. We quickly found the swimming pool which is fantastic. Spring fed and very large for a hotel pool, an ideal way to cool off.
The steak house restuarant served great food, although it gets very busy due it being the only place to eat, but you can wait for your table in the bar next door so it's not too bad. I felt the prices were reasonable given that you are captive there. We also had the breakfast buffet which again offered reasonable value and was one of the better buffets we had during our trip.
While we were there, there was an offer at the golf course to play 9 holes with clubs and buggy hire for only 25 dollars. We took advantage of the offer but the downside was a 6am tee off to finish before the sun came up. It was still very enjoyable to play on the lowest golf course in the world.
Death Valley is an amazing place and well worth a visit, even in the heat of summer, and I would recommend a stop at Furnace Creek Ranch just to experience the desert if nothing else.
Whilst they could make some improvements, overall we enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.

As it is the only overnight place in the death valley, the room price and the quality you get for that is pretty different. The room itself was kind of clean, but looked shabby and worn down. The bathroom was also dirty. The fridge in our room was dirty too and at least 30 years old, couldn't be closed properly and the cooling function wasn't really what you might expect from a fridge.
The pool was large and nice in the evening, however to get there, you have to cross a lawn as there is no path. Always wear closed shoes, there a quite some scorpions around the resort.
The check-in took ages, as there were only two desks and especially the lady didn't really understand how to work with her computer. That was really annoying to see someone that slow.

Death Valley is truly an experience. Furnace Creek Ranch was a great place to stay, offering restaurant, bar, gift shop and swimming pool. It was too hot to go in the pool in the sun, so a swim in the dark was a fantastic experience, particularly combined with a bit of star watching. The restaurant was good and reasonably priced. The bar was a little on the quiet side, but I suspect most people were in bed early to make the most of the early morning 'cooler' temperatures - it was still 96F at 7am! Afternoon temperatures were 120F. The accommodation was pretty basic (I've stayed in better national park cabins). The house keeping could have been better - don't look under the beds...you'll realise they don't bother cleaning there.

An oasis in the desert indeed. The swimming pool was particularly welcome in the evening heat. Bar and restaurant, and small but nice enough cabin with quietish air-conditionning. Staff were fine, and we picked a quiet time which was good too. Would probably stay again, but maybe not in June as the heat made us feel dizzy!
