“This is essentially a day trip, but worth it”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Plan a full day. Hike a mile down a trail descending about 750 feet. Then take a 45 minute boat tour to the Wizard Island. You will have 3 hours there to hike to the top, a 750 foot climb and back. Take water and good shoes. The trail can be rough. After the 3 hour pickup you will have more guided boat tour. It was a wonderful experience. Book the boat tour way ahead of travel as space is limited.

“It's worth the hike up to the top of the caldera!”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

How many people can say they've been inside a caldera (Wizard Island) which is inside another caldera (Crater Lake)? We've come to the lake before but weren't able to score going to the island so this time we planned in advance to be able to get tickets. They limit how many people can go on the island each day so you have to have reservations. It was a bit unclear when the tickets went on sale (we got conflicting stories) so be sure to check by calling. The hike up is pretty strenuous, and you have to have good shoes. The shore by the dock where they let you off is all rock so sandals won't really cut it. We stopped and ate after we got off the boat and then headed up. Watch out for the ground squirrels if you are eating - they've obviously been fed a lot and are AGGRESSIVE little buggers! Going inside the caldera at the top of the island is a bit of a steep decline, but believe it or not the hike out is not that bad if you go up the far side (opposite of the way most people come down, where there's a trail). The views are incredible (of course) and it's really a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you're brave you can take a dip; the water was darn cold when we were there so only one person in our party did. It's not to be missed!

“Breathtaking Perspective of Crater Lake”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

The Boat Tour is really amazing - where else can you be in a boat in a volcano! The tour guides are very informative and make the tour really interesting as well as scenic. Being close up to the Phantom ship was a real highlight and they even circled it twice. We did the Wizard Island Drop-off tour - 3 hours was not quite enough time to both hike to the top and visit the Bay - maybe if you rush it, but we enjoyed our lunch and the view at the top, so we'll have to visit the Bay another time. oh darn! It is definitely worth the hike!
About 75% of the tickets can be reserved ahead but they save the other 25% for purchase at the kiosks in the gift shops on the day before and day off the tours. So if you haven't reserved ahead, be sure and visit the kiosks first thing, as they do sell out quickly.
It is higher elevation, so prepare for cooler weather, especially at night if you're camping! but it can also be very warm so don't forget the sunscreen.
It is a National Park with wildlife that is protected, so dogs are not allowed on the trails. Not the best vacation to include your pets.

“Incredible view to complement Rim Drive”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

Definitely recommend the boat tour to get a very different perspective on Crater Lake. If possible, would also recommend one of the two tours that stop on Wizard Island. Hike to top is fun and a great view. Once back to the dock, went for a swim in the surprisingly warm water - maybe 60 or so. Reserve well ahead, especially if you are doing the Wizard Island tour - they fill up in summer and only two of the boats drop you off on Wizard Island.

“Inside crater lake”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Wizard island is a tiny island situated inside crater lake. It can be seen very clearly from watchman's peak. Near the wizard island the water is greenish blue in color, which is a nice contrast to the deep blue of crater lake.
