“Watchman's Peak and Rim Village give the best views”

Owner description: Scenic 33-mile drive which must be taken in a clockwise direction since areas of it are one-way.

There are numerous stops along the Rim Drive to take in different views of the lake. If you are short with time and only want the very best view points, then just stop at the pullout just north of Watchman's Peak and also the Rim Village/Crater Lake Lodge, perhaps with the Phantom Ship viewpoint too. The pullout north of Watchman's Peak gives you the best and closest view of the Wizard Island. The short trail near the Rim Village and Crater Lake Lodge gives the best views of the shoreline around the Watchman's Peak area, which are most impressive in early morning, with reflections of the Peak and shoreline in the deep blue lake. But if you have the time do take the Garfield Peak trail (allowing 2 hours roundtrip), which gives you even better views than any of the viewpoints along the Rim Drive.

The road is narrow and requires driver attention. Be mindful of bikers and hikers. This road was built during CCC times and is classic

Always a wonderful experience. The views are breath taking on each and every visit we have ever made to this National Treasure. It is a wonderful drive and also a great bike ride.

In another review I said Crater Lake was the one must-see in the incredibly beautiful state of Oregon. The Rim Drive is the best way to see it, with about 30 large and small pull-outs and parking lots. If one is crowded, simply drive a mile or so down the road where you'll probably have a view all to yourself. Every view of Crater Lake is stunning, and every one is different. The Rim Drive is about thirty miles around and can be driven in an hour without stops, but stopping to look and hike is the whole idea. Most viewpoints offer not only views of the lake on one side, but views of vast expanses of mountains and deserts on the other. At one point, the road dips down below the rim to Steel Visitors Center and some nice hikes through the forest. When driving the rim, keep your eyes on the road and on oncoming cars. Plenty of rubberneckers will end up coming head-on at you in your lane. Slow down, pull off often and keep an eye out for vacationers whose minds are also on vacation.

The title says it all. Take the time and get out for a hike or two. We thankfully went in a counter-clockwise direction as the day we were there they were hosting a bicycle ride that was going around clockwise.
