Huge visitor's center with lots of information. There is a HUGE gift shop and then a bookstore where you can get your national park passport stamped. At the information booth, the lady we talked to was SO nice and friendly and then when we went to purchase our tickets, there was a grumpy old man who was not so friendly. Oh well. This is where you get on the elevators to go down to the big room also. You have to stop at the visitor center to get tickets so explore the facility if time allows.

Awesome, as the rest of the reviews say. I wish the restaurant was still in the caverns, that would be cool. We enjoyed the caverns for a couple of days, we would certainly like to go back.

'Lots of wonderful reviews here. We were just here day before yesterday. 'My two cents (in addition to all the glowing reviews here which are definitely justified): bring that jacket/sweater they tell you to bring, bring a flashlight especially if you have kids so they can explore those dark little spots that are not lighted, DO wear those sturdy shoes they tell you to wear (this is not a place for flip flops), the Natural Entrance is strenuous but well worth the effort.

There are four elevators to the bottom of the caverns but two are being renovated. There are signs warning that during peak periods the wait to ride the elevators to the surface could be up to an hour. We walked right on to the elevators when we got ready to leave but its early in the tourist season.

Also, there is no longer a restaurant at the bottom of the Caverns. There are a few small snacks available and its all junk food kinda stuff... chips, cookies.. But, they do not allow you to carry in anything except water. My six year old granddaughter was hungry after all the hiking. Luckily, I had a few packaged fruit and nut snacks in my bag and I recommend you pack in something similar.

The fee went up June 1 to $10.00. Their website was not updated last time I looked.

It's a great place!! Have fun!

If you have time stop in and spend a couple of hours underground. We have visited several other caverns across the country and Carlsbad was not a disappointment. It was beautiful and the rooms were huge. We took the Kings Palace tour and then did the self guided tour. It was a morning well spent and a nice break from the heat outside. Our Ranger-guide was fun and very knowlegable. Glad we went.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the caverns. I love going into caves and caverns because its like stepping into a time machine and ending up in a different world. So much to see and I am always in awe of God's creations. We took our time to take in all the interesting formations and were able to get some really nice photos. The visitor center was nice and had much to choose from. I felt most of it was highly over priced but we still made a few purchases there simply because if we don't support these wonderful natural sites we may lose the opportunity to experience them. Very enjoyable and fun!
