This was great! We went Labor Day weekend and it was quite crowded. We were still able to see well and enjoyed watching the bats!! I hope the program helps show people all of the great things bats do!

Thank Liz D

I enjoyed the lovely evening -- being outside as the sun went down and it was quiet, etc. There were several hundred other people with us in the amphitheater, but still everyone kept quiet. The ranger did a nice, informative program and then the bats started coming out quite slowly and not in a huge group, etc. A bit of a let down. I understand some days/seasons are better.

This is an event you have to wait around the park about 3 hours after the caves closed. You will spend about two hours shopping and eating at the park before the 8:00 event starts. There was a ranger that answered questions for 30 min and talked about the bats. We were expecting to see thousands of bats. I asked a ranger if it was going to get any better. She said because of the fire two years ago, there are only about 50,000 bats instead of 200,000. We could hardly see anything. They looked liked tiny birds moving east. You were not allowed to photo or take movies. I guess they do not want it to end up on youtube because there is not much to see. We felt like we wasted our time waiting 3 hours to see this event.

The Bat Flight Program is something that everyone should do! It's free and amazing. Get there at least 45 minutes early to get a good seat, although it didn't seem there was a bad seat in the amphitheater. In my opinion, where we sat was perfect; we sat in the 3rd row from the front toward the right side of the amphitheater. The bats are unpredictable, so one must have patience. Also, there are NO CAMERAS allowed. NO PHONES, no nothing! One has to maintain complete silence during the bat's exit because any noise will interfere with the bats echolocation. So, if you have kids that can't be quiet, you have to go stand at the top. There were a few people there who were really rude. One family had a noisy kid and the ranger had to tell them to leave. It was very disruptive to the spectators and the bats. Please plan on being respectful when you go. Also, one guy's cell phone went off toward the end; very rude and inconsiderate. That gentleman was actually issued a ticked from the ranger. The rangers mean business, so just follow the rules. There is a way to obtain a camera permit, but this must be set up prior to the program; contact the park. The bats fly out of the cave anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, so like I said, patience is the key. They fly out during sunset and the rangers have a system set up to warn everyone when they are about to exit. The ranger who led the program was awesome. She had her hands full with telling 200 + people that they had to be completely silent. She was so passionate about bats and had a lot of information to share. Now listen up, once a year in the summer, they offer a "Bat Breakfast." This year, we attended it on July 20. We got there at 3:30 am and were the second people in line. For the 1st 120 people, they handed out tickets for a free, candle/lantern lit tour down to the bottom of the cavern. From there, you took the elevator up. It was amazing. It was worth it to get up that early. Check the park's website early in the year to start planning your trip around this event. They also give you breakfast burritos (which were pretty good), yogurt parfait, soda or orange juice, and fruit for $7. Oh, and they offered "bat friendly" coffee. The bats started coming back in the cave as soon as the sun started to rise. It was amazing. Try and plan your trip around this!

I was very glad we came back to the park in the evening to see the bats fly. Our kids (6,8,14) loved seeing the bats. Lasted much longer than I expected, very cool !!
