“Great stop before a hike”
Review of Gifford Homestead

Owner description: The National Park Service has renovated and refurnished the Gifford farmhouse as a cultural demonstration site to interpret the early Mormon settlement of the Fruita valley. The house depicts the typical spartan nature of rural Utah farm homes of the early 1900's. In addition to the farmhouse, the Gifford homestead includes a barn, smokehouse, garden, pasture, and rock walls.

“Great stop before a hike”
Reviewed August 15, 2012

This is a wonderful little homestead which is half bakery, half micro museum. The one half has some rooms and artifacts to show how it looked "in the day"....somewhere around 1908. The other half is a small bakery with fresh scones and delicious little pies made locally. The location is very clean and the prices very reasonable. It is truly a little gem.

“Great pies”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

We bought an apple and peach pie. Really good after having camp food for 6 days. Nice displays about the old homestead lifestyle as well.

“Interesting preserved and enhanced cabin in Capitol Reef”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

This is a very quick stop in the Fruita area of Capitol Reef. Although the homestead has some historical signficance, almost none of the artifacts are original and some are clearly anachronistic, surprising for a site maintained by the NPS. The recreated barn, in particular, looks more like a movie set than the quality of building the original settlers of this beautiful valley would have constructed. I'm an old farm boy, so I know the difference.

That said, an addition to the house includes a small store featuring outstanding locally made pies, jams, honey, and bread. The little store makes the Gifford Homestead worth a stop on your way to better, natural attractions farther down the road.

“Less a Historic Site than a Country Store Complex”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

The homestead has been nicely preserved, and there are a few rooms with antiques you can peek into, but this is not a historical site with enactments, demonstrations, or even much by way of detailed historical placards or text panels. The site mostly serves as a charming country store where you can buy ice-cream, jams and jellies, quilted hotpads, aprons, and other pioneer-like items. A refreshing place to stop and a very nice addition to the Park, but it's no Williamsburg-quality attraction.
