There is quite a bit to see in Canyonlands and this is a good place to see the Green River cut through the canyons. Pretty amazing.

We visited the Green River Overlook at Island in the Sky in Canyonlands National Park in hopes of seeing the iconic bend in the river. Though this overlook did have stellar views of the canyons below, it was not a good view of the river.

Even though it takes an hour to travel from Moab, Utah, to Canyonlands National Park and the Island in the Sky's most popular viewpoints, the trip is far from ho-hum as it introduces visitors to the park's impressive scenery, the wilderness of rock, the three surrounding mountain ranges that break the pattern of flat-topped mesas and buttes. But the majestic overlooks at Grand View Point and the Green River Overlook may spark the imagination of all who peer down into the depths of this gaping chasm. While mountain bikers, hikers and float trippers wander along the primitive pathways or navigate down the Colorado and Green Rivers, many visitors are content to access the overlooks and admire the spectacular landscapes. The Green River Overlook, from an elevation of 6,000 feet, looks out across Soda Springs Basin towards the Green River. Seeing this viewpoint for the first time may catch visitors from Chicago by surprise, especially if they aren't accustomed to wide open spaces and great heights and near silence. The Green River outlook, like the Grand View Point Outlook, lives up to the term "breath-taking experience." From this viewpoint, the Green River is a tiny ribbon of water at the bottom of an awe-inspiring canyon. The vista stretches out for 100 miles to the horizon. A sandstone viewing area, sparsely decorated with Utah juniper, marks the canyon rim and signals where a 2,200-foot drop-off begins to the river far below.

This was our first stop when we visited Island in the Sky district, and it was exactly what we were hoping for: a fantastic view over the canyons and the bed of the Green River. It doesn't seem to be as popular as Grand View Point or Mesa Arch, so that was a positive feature.

Beautiful spot to see. For photography, would say sunrise/sunset would be best. Don’t miss Mesa Arch, just a couple of miles away.

With only a few hours to visit the park before a plane flight, the NPS ranger at the entry gate had the answer to my question before I was even finished asking: Green River Overlook

A few miles from the farthest point from the entrance, this is a great place to start before working your way back from the Island in the Sky area, or as you head in that direction.

The parking area will likely be filled...you might want to park on the roadside before reaching the packed parking lot.

If you are coming with photographic intent, hope for sun with high clouds. The colors and textures can be epic.

Another not to miss spot of Canyonlands. The Green River is off in the distance but the vastness of the view is great.

Well worth coming for a look and to read about Powell's adventure and how he charted the courses of the Green and Colorado rivers. What a trip.

This is a must stop in this park. To see the canyons from the Green River is an amazing sight. It rivals the Colorado at Grand View. Amazing that the Green and Colorado rivers create this Island in the Sky!!

Canyonlands National Park was a third stop on our National Parks Road Trip. We took beautiful Scenic Road and stoped at Green River Overview - beautiful place. The view was fantastic, definitely recommended. We came in July, weather was excellent; sunny, tempreture high but not too hot, or at least we didn’t feel it.
