I love all of Moab, and Island In the Sky District of Canyonlands NP is gorgeous.
The entire park has only a small distance of paved road with limited viewpoints, so if you're a drive-by tourist hoping to take pictures from the car, you won't be doing Island In the Sky any justice. To get the most out of the solitude and breathtaking scenery of this district, you have to be prepared to hike and carry water. There are short and long hikes available - inquire at the Visitor's Center.
I've done the 11-mi roundtrip Murphy Loop hike twice, and it is somethin' ELSE going down that cliff face. Once at the bottom, we made stops at several gorgeous areas to eat a snack, and we agreed that there could possibly be no better dining room. I am always moved by the wide, unbroken vistas of multi-hued canyons and the sense of pure humbleness and being. Anyway, at the end of the loop, we had to trek back UP the cliff face of course (my goal was 30 minutes, and I did it in 28, yay!).
I'd love to hit up the other hikes of this district someday!
