I love all of Moab, and Island In the Sky District of Canyonlands NP is gorgeous.

The entire park has only a small distance of paved road with limited viewpoints, so if you're a drive-by tourist hoping to take pictures from the car, you won't be doing Island In the Sky any justice. To get the most out of the solitude and breathtaking scenery of this district, you have to be prepared to hike and carry water. There are short and long hikes available - inquire at the Visitor's Center.

I've done the 11-mi roundtrip Murphy Loop hike twice, and it is somethin' ELSE going down that cliff face. Once at the bottom, we made stops at several gorgeous areas to eat a snack, and we agreed that there could possibly be no better dining room. I am always moved by the wide, unbroken vistas of multi-hued canyons and the sense of pure humbleness and being. Anyway, at the end of the loop, we had to trek back UP the cliff face of course (my goal was 30 minutes, and I did it in 28, yay!).

I'd love to hit up the other hikes of this district someday!

We did a lot of of the short day hikes in Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands in a single day. It gave us a good lay of the land and some fantastic hiking. Gotta love the views!

Next day we rented a Jeep and camping gear from Canyonlands Jeep Adventures in Moab. Took an exciting ride on the Potash Trail to the White Rim Trail to our campsite at Airport B. We had all the camping gear we needed and then some. Best part was cooking out and the sky at night. Milky Way from one horizon to the other. Sky looked like it was filled with diamonds.

Next day we took White Rim to Shafer Trail out of the canyon and then went to Deadhorse Point State park before heading through Long Canyon and back to Moab. Great trip that we'd highly recommend.

People at Canyonlands jeep were very friendly and helpful. Having a comprehensive list of camping gear was comforting when you are that far from town. Highly recommend!

Canyonlands reminded us of the Grand Canyon. We did the rim and arch walks, which were very easy and had spectacular views. There were a lot less people here than at Arches.

On the same road out of Moab, UT you can combine Dead Horse Point State Park with Canyonlands National Park. Each has beautiful vistas and can be done adequately in a single day. The observation outlook at Dead Horse allows you to walk for a short distance (less than a mile) to get a different perspective of the Colorado River below. Canyonlands offers fabulous views as far as one can see. Worth the trip.
