“Wish we could have stayed longer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2013

Due to time constraints, we only spent a half-day inside Canyonlands NP and all of it within the Island in the Sky section. We knew beforehand that this was not enough, but the choice was either skipping the trip here altogether or at least visiting the park for a few hours.

We chose Island in the Sky since we felt it was the closest to our hotel in Moab. It still took us at least 45 minutes just to reach the visitor center since it was more than 30 miles away. After talking to a ranger and buying some souvenir shirts and posters, we went to see the different parts of the park along Grand View Point Road. Canyonlands NP was huge although not as crowded when compared to Grand Canyon NP. We stopped along the various overlooks to see and appreciate this piece of geologic wonder. Grand View Point and nearby Orange Cliffs overlooks had jaw dropping scenery. When I saw the canyons at Grand View Point, I thought it looked like the footprint of a giant T-Rex. We would have loved to hike some of the trails if not for lack of time.

We knew we did not do justice to this amazing park by not spending at least two days to explore it. If we get the chance to come back, not only will we spend a couple of days here, but also plan time to visit Dead Horse Point State Park.

“The Name Says it All”

Canyonlands and Island in the Sky are spectacular and easily accessible. The heights/depths of the canyons have to be compared to the Grand Canyon. If you are scared of heights, as someone in my party was, there is limited hiking and you need to restrict visit to overlooks, with the exception of Mesa Arch and Upheaval Dome, which are easily doable. If you visit Arches Nat'l Park first, the movie in their visitor's center covers both Arches and Canyonlands and is worth viewing.

“Grand looks deep into vast canyons”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

This are of the park has only 12 campsites on a first-come, first-served basis. So get there early. But the park is easily accessed from Moab, so there are other options. We enjoyed the hike to the dome created either by salt or a meteorite (a controversy). The hike to the first overlook is easy, but to the second is a bit challenging - follow the cairns (rocks stacked as trail markers). The park is huge, so allow several days.

“More Easily Accessible than Needles”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

We visited Island in the Sky rather than Needles simply because it was so much more easily accessible. The view of the canyon is incredible, and there are trails for everyone. If you are a hiking nut, there are long trails into the canyon. Or if trekking through rocks isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of short walks with just as amazing views or overlooks. Trails I would personally recommend are the Mesa Arch Trail or the Grand View Overlook.
