there appears to be many prairie dogs but they run for cover as soon as you try to take pictures or follow the path to walk out there to get closer. But i would stop, maybe you would have better luck

We stopped at this view point area, and at first, we were not sure about what we were supposed to see. But as we walked a bit and looked around, we realized there were prairie dogs peeking out of the ground everywhere! It was really quite fun to see them poking their heads up, and as we knew what to look for, we suddenly were seeing so many of them! Definitely a worthwhile place to stop on your drive through the badlands

The prairie dog town is a must see for anyone with children visiting the Badlands. Even my teenagers were fascinated with the "pups" and were interested in the short lesson the ranger shared with us explaining their behaviors, barks and their homes. Please heed the signs saying "do not feed prairie dogs" as it does pose a danger for them.

Who wouldn't love a Prairie Dog Town? Well, we discovered, (in an up close and VERY personal way later in the next morning at the hotel), chiggers like Prairie Dog Towns as much as we did. We thought initially that perhaps the motel had bedbugs, but after a careful evaluation of the mattresses and comparison of insect bite characteristics, the culprits, (much to the relief of the motel), were CHIGGERS. We made the mistake of not knowing what could result in off-trail inspection of the little critters and their homes and close up photography could bring as a side effect. Moral: if you stray off the beaten path and walk through the grass, spray some insect repellent on your legs, and tuck long pants into your boots and then spray anyway. I think now the chirps from the Prairie Dogs were indeed a warning, not to the other Prairie Dogs, but to us.... BEWARE of CHIGGERS!
