“It's not a complete trip to the Black Hills without experiencing The Badlands.”

Owner description: A ridge that goes through the park, and is the site of incredible rock formations, which are being eroded, and therefore slowly change over time.

The prairie is stunning. Hundreds of buffalo with their calves, a bighorn sheep with her little one, prairie dogs and their little babies as well. I saw a ground owl and a coyote too. All these animals I saw midday. It was storming for a while but when it passed, it was nothing but golden light and beautiful clouds. There was even a rainbow. Drive slow through the badlands and take your time. Enjoy and revel in every overlook, and make sure to get out of the car and experience a few trails. This, just like every National Park, is a treasure that belongs to America and is an excellent place for landscape and wildlife photography. There are a lot of kitschy, touristy things to do in the Black Hills area. I would take Badlands over any of these places ANY day.

The scenery was incredible! We didn't have time to do much hiking but it was wonderful to just see the place. If you are interested in geology at all you must go here.

Colors and valleys the entire drive. With so few fences, you really see the natural beauty and can get almost too close to the edge. Keeping teenage boys from venturing too near the edge is a challenge. Be sure to have your camera ready.

I loved driving through the Badlands. The rock formations were amazing and to be able to see each layer so clearly was like looking through a window in time. The teen boys liked climbing the rocks, but it was really scary in some areas... They weren't as impressed as I was.

The scenic loop in the park is excellent with plenty of great viewpoints to stop and take photos. I drove it twice, once in the evening and once in the morning and found the evening drive best. It was hot and sunny in the morning so if you are going to hike anything longer than 1/2 mile go early and bring water and a hat. Saw some pretty irresponsible parents with children unprotected from the sun at high noon. Would like to go back when I have more time and explore the southern section of the park.
