“Great Drive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2014

This is a gat trip through some beautiful landscape in a very unforgiving land. There is a fee, but worth every penny. The lab lets you get a first hand look at geologists working on real samples found in the park. There is also a very comprehensive Junior Ranger program.

“We were incredibly unlucky & timed this visit badly - weather”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

When we went (mid-May) it was poring with rain (for several days apparently), blowing a gale and visibility was done to a few hundred yards.

Moral of this Review is go on a nice day.

It looked like a place very well worth visiting, photogenic and full of history.

As it was, we could not wait to get out of it and on our way to somewhere drier. that alone took us 444 miles to North Platte, Nebraska (from Rapid City, SD).

“Beautiful Park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2013

This is a South Dakota must do. There are several nice hikes, viewpoints, and alot of wildlife including buffalo, coyotes, pronghorn, and prarie dogs. There are nice picnic areas and good campgrounds. Be aware the weather can be exteme spring can be really cold, summer can be extremely hot, and we once camped during the worst storm South Dakota had seen in a decade!!!

“Too good to miss”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2013

Although the national parks were still in shutdown, we managed to see a good part of the area. We had no prior conception of what the landscape would look like, and were amazed to see the jagged buttes and rock spires extending across the area as far as the eye could see. It would have been an arduous undertaking to traverse this hostile landscape and one can understand why it was named as such. The variation in the colours of the buttes and canyons were a photographers delight, especially in the clear sunlight with remnants of snow lying in the hollows, and I’m pleased we made the trip to see this outstanding landscape.

“A nice drive from I-90”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2013

This national park is easily accessible fro I-90. Then you can drive right through the center of the park on state highway 240, even if you are driving a large RV. So even if you don't stop to hike some of the many trails, you still get beautiful views of the park. However, do yourself a favor and stop for at least some of the shorter trails and stop and the many pullouts to enjoy the views and take photos. We were in a 35' RV and found the pullouts amply large enough to pull off the road. There is an admission fee so if you are a senior, bring your lifetime senior pass or if not buy an annual pass.
