Owner description: A ridge that goes through the park, and is the site of incredible rock formations, which are being eroded, and therefore slowly change over time.

An absolutely stunning landscape that seems to fall from the miles of South Dakota prairie.

Only a few miles from interstate 90, a detour through the Badlands is amazing. The buttes and bluffs in orange, yellow and pink are breathtaking, especially in morning or evening hours.

Wildlife roams here- bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs and mountain goats are common. Some my come close, while others require binoculars.

Plan to stop at the visitor center as they have terrific displays and an on site paleontology lab where they clean and catalog fossils found throughout the park.

Free ranger programs and Junior Ranger for the kids.

Water is available at the visitors center; you'll want to pack food if you plan to stay a while.

You will be totally amazed by Badlands National Park and its vast array of colors, structures, and subtleties. Never did I expect what I saw. This is the best kept secret in the national park system. The roads are excellent, and the drive is pure pleasure. There are so many places to stop, look, take photos, and hike!!!!

This was one of the highlights of a 2 week trip of national parks. We saw Bison up close - from the car! The prairie dog town was pretty slow because we hit it mid-day but there were a few popping up. If you drive in from Wall, turn right toward Prairie Dog Town. Take that (pretty rough) road a few miles for the best wildlife viewing. We went just past Prairie Dog Town and then turned around an drove the loop through the park. Impressive landscapes. Be sure to eat and get gas before you go in, though. There is very little available in terms of amenities.

This wonderful park was such a treat to see. I loved the layers of colored rock which make up the formations. Erosion has carved interesting shapes over the years and the visitor center explains how it all came to be.
some people in our group said it was the highlight of our tour, even surpassing Mt. Rushmore or previous sights such as the Grand Canyon. Comparisons aside, it is just amazing to see. I would have liked to turn the bus around at the end and drive all the way thru in reverse order to see it all again.

The Badlands National Park is a stunning landscape that begs you to get out of your car and explore its many nooks and crannies. There are numerous stops along the loop road to get out and walk to overlooks to take in the glorious views. Hiking trails give travelers a chance to get up close to some amazing formations. Stop at the visitors center to view the film and be sure to drive out to the prairie dog town and buffalo herd.
Don't pass by this national treasure on your way to or from the Black Hills.
