Owner description: A ridge that goes through the park, and is the site of incredible rock formations, which are being eroded, and therefore slowly change over time.

Hiking in the park is limited to one long trail and several shorter ones. Castle trail is the longest at 5 miles one way. The terrain is very primitive. There really is no shade. You will need sturdy shoes (saw one girl walking in flip flops. Yikes), sunglasses and sun hat and water. You can fill your own bottle at the visitors center w/o charge. The formations are absolutely beautiful. If you can, enter by the Pinnacles entrance. The drive into the park from that direction is spectacular. You will pay to enter the park but it is good for several days. Fight the urge to stop at Wall Drug. Nothing more than a tourist trap.

To say it was worth the 8 hour drive would be a waste of words. We spent nearly all day exploring and I honestly don't know a better description. The pure vastness of nothingness is mind boggling, to me at least. The rock formation shapes seem to change at every turn, along with color of the striations in the stone. If you have young children they'll love the dips, drops, and places to run in. A word of caution: there are signs posted to beware of rattlesnakes, they aren't kidding; also there are some very dangerous places for youngsters to fall from. Enjoy!!

It's compared to the Grand Canyon, but on a smaller scale. It's hard to believe so few people have heard of this place. The rock formations are outstanding. People have to see it in person to understand what it is all about. Spend more time here rather than at Wall Drug if you are passing through.

Beautiful. It isn't what you expect coming of the Prairie landscape. It is worth the trip off the interstate if you are heading into or out of Rapid City.

Viewing various parts of the Badlands as a friend and I drove through this national park, I was impressed by the beauty of the rock formations. There are places where visitors can stop to take some incredible photos. People can actually walk out onto the rocks and other formations in several areas. Watch out for snakes though. (There are signs stating this fact.)

I was comparing this to the Grand Canyon. The difference is that the Grand Canyon has been carved out, and visitors look into a "hole" while the Badlands has rock formations "sticking" up from the ground. Kind of tough to explain until you see it up close. A definite visit when in South Dakota.
