“Biking through the woods”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

I was on a biking tour of Maine and we did 2 days of biking in the Carriage Roads. Beautiful the bridges are all stone, roads are well maintained for hiking and biking. If you are unable to walk they still have carriage rides which I would have loved to do too.

“Match trail to rider and take the right bike”
Reviewed October 15, 2013 via mobile

These trails are truly wonderful, but they do take a bit of planning to enjoy properly. First is to pick the right trail. If you are quite fit, do the section from intersection 12 to 10. It's a very long climb, but the views of the sound, mainland, and interior of the island are superb once you get to the top. If you are less fit, the route east of Eagle Lake to Bubble Pond is very nice and Bubble Pond is very scenic. For those who just want an easy spin, the Witch Hole area is good, although it doesn't have the dramatic views.

As for type of bike -- stay away from road bikes with skinny tires. A hybrid or cross bike with wider tires would be ideal. A full-on mountain bike will work, but is overkill on the packed cinder surface. Inexperienced riders should take it easy on the downhill, curvy sections as the cinder surface can wash out on you.

Enjoy!

“Acadia Carriage Roads”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

A very cool piece of history of this amazing National Park - did you know about the Rockerfellers' involvement in Acadia's development? Learn about it while you're there! Great for biking or hiking, too!

“Excellent network and views!”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

We hired hybrid bikes from South West Cycles at South West Harbor and found them to be very efficient and accommodating. We got excellent bikes, helmets, locks and puncture repair kit and were out of the shop ready to go in ten minutes. Staff were informed and really nice.
We parked at the north entrance to Eagle Lake and cycled around 36 miles of the carriage roads. The hybrids worked well on the terrain and we had a great time with a few good climbs which gave fantastic views. There is something for everyone and all without the worry of cars.
Stopping off at Jordan Pond for an afternoon tea of popovers and cream is well worth the calories burned on the steeper inclines.
Take your camera as there are some beautiful vistas and you can enjoy these as a cyclist or walker. It really is a beautiful place.

“Scenic, groomed, mountain biking trails through Acadia!!”
Reviewed September 18, 2013 via mobile

The carriage roads through the park provide scenic views at every turn as well as quality mountain biking! Scenic, Witch Pond Trail Road and the Eagle Lake Road are two great carriage roads with some hilly terrain and scenery at every turn. Be sure to stop by the rapids and pond on the Witch Pond Loop and both combined are about 10 miles, great for a morning of mountain biking through Acadia!
