This one-way road along the rugged shore of Mount Desert Island offers dramatic views of the rock-bound coast and the sea beyond. It is fun to pull into the parking lane and walk out on the ledges overlooking the ocean and watch the lobsterfolk at work, the gulls circling and crying, the waves crashing on the shore and the tour boats and pleasure craft cruising by. Behind the shore rises Gorham Mountain, excellent for hiking on a well-marked trail. Near the beginning of the loop road is a beaver pond. Further along is a lovely sand beach with good access, changing rooms and toilets. The loop road ends near the famous Jordan Pond House where one should stop for tea and popovers in mid-afternoon.

Driving the loop road is like being given the keys to the sweet shop! The drive is pretty amazing itself, but it's the way that it links up so many great views, beaches, lakes, look out and trailheads that makes this so worth doing. We were stopping the car every two minutes to look at something. It makes getting the best out of Acadia NP so easy. Highly recommended as the starting point for a great day's walking and sightseeing!

I often wonder how people can backpack their earthly belongings and sit on a rock, to meditate, and somehow I am sorry I didn't while visiting this incredible treasure.
It is definitely worth the ride to see this park, I am sorry I did not take the carriage tour, I received wrong informaton that it was not in service the day we visited.
But to stand on Camelback mountain and touch the sand of Sands Beach, that holds treasures of the sea which are crushed by nature and surrounded by huge granite mounds on this beautiful beach. This park is picture perfect and exceptionally well maintained.

This road is a great way to see the park and take in some beautiful scenery! My husband and I made the loop at least two times. There are so many pretty places to get out of the car and see pretty scenery!

Our innkeeper loaned us a copy of the cd of the park tour. It was helpful and informative, but we mostly had fun just soaking in the gorgeous scenery along the drive.Somewhere near Thunder Hole there is a pull off (not named) near a stone bridge. Cross the road to the water side and you will see a set of wooden stairs by a small stream. This will take you down to the coolest stone beach in a small cove. So beautiful. I've posted a few pictures of it. Also of course, do make the drive up to Cadillac Mtn. Even on a gloomy day, the views are incredible!
