“Shutdown? What shutdown?”

We don't need no stinkin' car... Just ride your bike! We took our tandems and enjoyed the once in a lifetime experience of riding the entire loop road, including Cadillac, with no cars or tour buses to contend with. This is how it was meant to be enjoyed. Saw quite a few folks doing the same -- lots of bikes parked at the top of Cadillac even.

“We visited in mid Sept when the park was open”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2013

Acadia National Park is a must see if you are in the Bar Harbor, ME, area. The 27 mile loop drive affords you the opportunity to pull off at many designated spots to view the scenery, take photos, or venture on down a trail. While you can typically see some beautiful sights at the turn-off spots, we found that walking even a short distance down a trail provides many different and interesting angles for photo taking. Some people were extremely adventurous and hiked right down to the water’s edge but that can be very dangerous with the rocky formations. We noticed that a lot of people take the bus or trolley tours but you don’t get a chance to get out and see much. Just take the drive in your car and when you see a place to turn off, do it and explore that area. Be sure to drive up to the top of Cadillac Mountain and take in the view of the entire region. Acadia is certainly a national scenic treasure. Don’t miss it. Also, if you are a senior citizen, buy the National Park Pass for $10 and you plus one other can get in free to all the national parks.

“Park Closure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

Even though the park was closed to motor vehicles you can bicycle or walk in. What a wonderful
way to see the park without cars everywhere. There were hundreds of people around the areas that were within walking distance of entrances. Mostly quiet and alone in others. Spoke with the only park ranger I saw & he just advised to be careful, that we were on our own. Wonderful way to see the park.

“Great way to see the park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

90% of this road is free to use which is helpful to see some of the main attractions. Once you get towards the ocean side of the loop road it costs $20 for the pass (which is good for a week). Sadly we were only there for a day so we couldn't take full advantage of it. The road is well maintained and wasn't very busy during mid-week just past Labor Day which was really nice.

“Poorly Managed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

The drive affords stunning views of the coastline, and should not be missed.

Park management, however, left much to be desired. We visited after Labor Day on a Monday, but the place was overcrowded.
Signs give the impression that one needs to buy a pass in the visitor centre - this required a climb up many steps - how would disabled or elderly cope? - then a long wait in line.
Fortunately I discovered that one can bypass all this and pay entry fee along the road.

Very overcrowded parking lot at Jordan Pond, again poorly managed. Some folk were standing in car places trying to 'reserve' them whilst the called the driver on cell phone - outrageous. Selfish drivers and road rage.
