Even though the park was closed to motor vehicles you can bicycle or walk in. What a wonderful
way to see the park without cars everywhere. There were hundreds of people around the areas that were within walking distance of entrances. Mostly quiet and alone in others. Spoke with the only park ranger I saw & he just advised to be careful, that we were on our own. Wonderful way to see the park.

90% of this road is free to use which is helpful to see some of the main attractions. Once you get towards the ocean side of the loop road it costs $20 for the pass (which is good for a week). Sadly we were only there for a day so we couldn't take full advantage of it. The road is well maintained and wasn't very busy during mid-week just past Labor Day which was really nice.

The drive affords stunning views of the coastline, and should not be missed.

Park management, however, left much to be desired. We visited after Labor Day on a Monday, but the place was overcrowded.
Signs give the impression that one needs to buy a pass in the visitor centre - this required a climb up many steps - how would disabled or elderly cope? - then a long wait in line.
Fortunately I discovered that one can bypass all this and pay entry fee along the road.

Very overcrowded parking lot at Jordan Pond, again poorly managed. Some folk were standing in car places trying to 'reserve' them whilst the called the driver on cell phone - outrageous. Selfish drivers and road rage.

The Park Loop Road is beautiful! A great way to see a little of everything in Acadia - and of course, an easy way to get around the park to see all the sites.

Even on a misty day, our bus driver had a lot to tell us about what we could (and couldn't) see! Not every driver is quite as interactive so if you want a real tour pay to take Olly's Trolley but if you want to sit back and just enjoy the scenery, take advantage of the free (donations gratefully accepted) bus that will take you over the spectacular seven mile loop! A piece of advice: check to see when the cruise ships are due into Bar Harbor and plan your trip outside of those times - the buses will be very crowded!
