We went to watch the sunset after a beautiful day in the park. The view was beautiful from the top but it was extremely cold even though we were well dressed. As for the sunset itself, I have seen prettier, however, combined with the amazing view it was well worthwhile. We parked at the top, but driving back down, I agree with other recommendations, that if you can catch a parking spot on the way up it will be just as good.
Like everything else we saw in Acadia, this too was wonderful.

On the way up to the top there are some pullouts that afford a good view of the surroundings.
The parking lot at the top is fairly small. We arrived late in the morning (beginning of October) and had to circle the lot twice before an empty space was available. Taking public transportation (bus) to the top is a good alternative.

While the elevation is just over 1500 feet, the view from the top is excellent.
There is a short, 0.3 mile, path around the peak which affords different views. Both the ocean bay and the adjacent hillside are beautiful sights.

Even if you have only a short time in Acadia National Park you should not miss Cadillac Mountain.

The first day my husband and I visited Cadillac mountain was foggy and misty. We were visiting come rain or shine so we drove up and while there was not much of a view, being on top with the fog swirling all around was quite an experience. When we returned the next day with the sun shining on us, the contrast was amazing. The views were unbelievable, the colors were bright. Needless to say, I don't think we could have really appreciated the sun without the fog. So, if its foggy or misty, go up anyway. It really is amazing.

Kind of long but well worth the time and effort...it offers unbelievable panoramic views not far from tge start if the trail. If you are not up for the whole hike you could leave a car at the top so when you get up there you can drive down ;)
