“The resounding crash of the waves against the rocks...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

...can only leave you awestruck. The force of the waves were so strong at one point that those visitors standing adjacent to this area received some of the backsplash. The site is easily reached by man-made staircase with a side railing and the background provides a wonderful backdrop for some nice pictures.

“A must!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

If you're on Mount Desert Island this is a must place to visit. It's especially good when the swells are between 6-8 feet b/c the effect is really neat. However, if the swells are above that, i.e., 8-10-12 feet please don't go down near the water as that could be dangerous.

“Three quarter tide is best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

We have been visiting thunder Hole for over 40 years as part of our return to Arcadia each summer. It is easily accessible from the park loop road with parking across the road as well as along roadside in high season. The best time to see the highest waves crash into the "hole" and hear the thunder is three quarter tide on a windy day. Sometimes they close the lower portion if the waves get too high. It can be wet and slippery down the walkway, but not usually a problem. Note the view of Sand Beach from the rocks at the Thunder Hole viewing station and just down the road a short distance is a beautiful place to set up a chair, read a book or just take a nap. You will see a nice view of Otter Point as well which is a neat turn off for walking the rocky shore. There is a small gift shop and bathroom facilities across the road in the parking lot. water can be purchased there. Watch the little ones as the guard rail is made for adults. Seniors use your National Park pass to enter the loop.

“Very fun and enjoyable.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2013 via mobile

We really enjoyed Thunder Hole as it was a nice walk down to the area where the waves crash against the rocks and churn the area under the rocks making the loud noise. There is a guide rail to hole onto and good area to stand and watch or listen to the waves. a must see if in Acadia national park.
