Mfangano Island Camp
Reviewed November 23, 2011

We could not make our usual visit to Lamu because of the security situation and selected Mfanagno Island camp instead. We were delighted - we prefer small camps. James and his wonderful team deliver quiet efficiency, great atmosphere, unbelievably good food - not to mention the 9 Hammercop babies on the lawns! - in an unbelievably wonderful setting. An ideal break - we stayed only 4 days but wished we had booked more. If you like birds, sea, fish, good food, great atmosphere etc then you should stay a few nights here.

Room Tip: There is no such thing as a room that is not good here

Mfangano is a truly idyllic spot in which to relax after a safari on the Mara. I can’t understand why people would come for the day and not stay. Watching the sunset over Lake Victoria from our room, then walking through the gardens to dinner on the shore of the Lake was not to be missed. Having stayed in two other Govenor’s properties (Loldai House and Little Governor’s), the food and the service here were the best. Peter Njoroge, who had been manager at Loldia for so many years and is now the manager here, must take some of the credit but all the staff were exceptionally friendly. You don’t have to be a fisherman to enjoy Mfangano – just relax by the small pool, or have a massage and then enjoy eating the fish that someone else has caught! Imagine Africa, who organised the trip for us, arranged an upgrade to the suite in Cottage No. 1. If you can arrange to stay there then do – it is a wonderful place to end a safari holiday

Room Tip: Cottage No. 1 is just magical.

We stayed at Mfangano for 3 nights after our 5 day safari at Maasai Mara. The camp is situated on the bank of Lake Victoria. There are only 6 cottages which are quite large and tastefully decorated. The service is personal. The place is absolutely stunning and is also a great place for fishing for nile perch. The chef is brilliant and if you manage to catch a fish he will surely turn it into something exotic. Their manager James is a young chap who is extremely friendly and helpful.

Really can't recommend this hotel enough. Great location, wonderful rooms and perfect for some R&R at the end or start of a holiday.

We had a super 3 nights here where the hospitality was perfect too with three excellent meals everyday.

I'm just amazed more people don't try it.

Thanks to Captain Michael and Samwell for sharing their beautiful island and “secret” fishing spots with us and for helping us to capture those great shots of the Fish Eagle. The accommodations are lovely and the staff from morning wake up with coffee and tea to a gourmet dinner prepared by chef, Samuel” were the perfect ending to our stay in Kenya. Massage therapist, Rita, gives a commendable massage and the staff in general made every effort to make stay enjoyable.

We stayed at Mfangano for four nights with our three daughters, aged, 21,19 and 14 years. We went there having spent two nights at Loldia House , Lake Naivasha and four nights at Il Moran, Masai Mara, both of which were outstanding and we would highly recommend.
Mfangano is paradise. The setting beautiful, unspoilt and peaceful. The accommodation is luxurious and spacious. The staff are friendly helpful lovely people. The food was truly outstanding every meal was a treat, so fresh and tasty but not too heavy, using all fresh ingredients and homemade bread every meal. We went fishing and caught our supper and sailing in one of the long boats. We all had a fantastic massage given in a pretty thatched hut with only the sound of Lake Victoria lapping the shore and the birds of which there are plenty and monkeys. What could be better!
We also went on relaxing trip around the island and had a picnic on a remote smaller island on a clear White sandy beach. We can't praise this place enough it really is paradise!

Having spent a week in the Mara and Governors Camp it was wonderful to spend two nights here relaxing. Governors Camp in the Mara is superb but to enjoy it to its best you have to get up before 6am to go out on game drives. The drives are off road and dusty and bumpy; but the game is Simply the best..

Conversely Mfangano is the complete opposite, its total relaxation. Its a 50 minite flight from the Mara and then a 20 minute small boat ride to the camp. The rooms are just idyllic and the food is superb. Yoiu are asked what you like and dont like and the chef will then prepare your meals.

What is there to do? You can go fishing on the boats. This is a wonderful way to see the island and the bird life. There are also otters and monitor lizards to see as well. The local fishing village is a 15 minute walk and whilst you will be accompanied it is very safe. They are so pelasd to see visitors. You can go to thelocal school as well. Alternatively you can go on walks through the island to see the flora and fauna. There is also very ancient rock art to see as well.

However if you have come from the Mara the opportunity to sit over looking Lake Victoria, either by teh pool or from the lawns with a suitable drink and a book is wonderful too. No early morning room calls just paradise.

One night is too little, two nights is great and three totally indulgent. Canoot recommend it highly enough.

Mfangano Island Camp is a luxury, island hideaway lodge, where you can enjoy relaxing break. The camp is perfect to include in your Kenya Safari either between safaris in Kenya's Masai Mara and the Serengeti in Tanzania or following a safari in the Masai Mara. Lapped by the waters of Lake Victoria shaded by giant fig trees, and lost to the world, Mfangano Island Camp is an oasis of tranquility, an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Your first view is of beautiful tropical gardens set on a secluded bay. Lawns hug the waterline, flowerbeds and rock gardens surround the camp. Enormous boulders sit at the water’s edge, a perch for cormorants or giant monitor lizards to sun themselves. If all you desire is to laze in the sunshine, each room has it’s own private veranda with sun beds. Or there are plenty of activities to keep you occupied. The food’s as fresh as can be, fished from the lake (hopefully by you!) or picked fresh from the island’s vegetable gardens and orchards. Governors has been pioneering immersive and transformational safaris in the Mara since 1972. We were the first operators to be permanently based inside the Mara, our site was chosen for its prime location and was the designated “getaway” for the Governors of Kenya. Unfenced and right in the heart of the action. Our camps are Located in some of the best and most precious Wildlife Locations in the world.
