really delightful place.although only a short drive from glasgow you get the feeling of being in the country, miles from anywhere.a quaint tearoom with excellent home baking, try the rhubarb pie,the small antique shop has a resident lhasa apso guard dog.really nice walk along the river.aIt also hasd a small museum and a working mill wheel.all in all a nice visit.

I fully agree that this is a hidden gem - I was born and brought up nearby in Fairlie but it's taken me until now to visit Dalgarven Mill. I suppose the first thing I'd say is that the name implies it's all about milling, but the majority of the museum is all about country life in Ayrshire and costumes. I ended up learning quite a lot about traditional agricultural life while I was there.

It's in a peaceful spot and there are walks in the grounds through fields of wild flowers and up to the dam. The tea room does home cooking and baking, I had soup and a 'Plooman's lunch' (it's all very Ayrshire!)

Part of the charm is that it's family run, and you can't help but get the impression that the mill and the collections are all part of the family too, there's a real love and affection for the place. It's evidently somewhere that people like to go back to, as there were obviously some 'weel kent faces' in the tearoom at the end.

If I had to choose one word to describe my trip it would be 'Heartwarming'.

This is a "hidden" gem; hidden because it is easy to drive past and think it isn't worth a stop - but it is. The mill has a fascinating history and the display rooms are full of interesting stuff that tells a story. That story covers the history, agriculture and industry of Ayrshire in an entertaining fashion. Everything is well described so that you don't end up looking at a load of meaningless junk. If you are puzzled the staff are friendly and helpful. There are also interesting activities for children. As a bonus the tearoom serves good, homemade food and the mill stand on a lovely river.
