We stayed at Mere Brook for three weeks, excluding weekends, whilst my wife was undergoing radiotherapy at ClatterBridge Cancer Centre. We chose to stay here based on the location as we did not have a car (it is closest to ClatterBridge) and reviews posted here.
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome as we are met by Joanne who, after showing us around, made us tea with a selection of home baked cake and biscuits - a word of warning if you are dieting cakes are always available as is the offer of a pot of tea after a return from a day out.
Breaking down into three key areas - accommodation, service, location.
Over the three weeks we stayed in two rooms but mainly in the Balcony Room which, as the name suggests, has a balcony overlooking the gardens and pond. The rooms we stayed in were all individually styled and very large when compared to a hotel and had a separate bath or shower room.
There is a cottage with other rooms, recently built, but we never visited or stayed there so I am unable to comment.
In addition to the rooms it is like staying with friends for the weekend as you have free run of the property and can spend time in the formal lounge, a really sunny room overlooking the gardens or in the grounds themselves oh and not forgetting the kitchen; but more to come on that!
Service - The best!
As mentioned previous from the moment we arrived we were made to feel at home and were, in fact, advised to treat the place as if it was our home.
There is only a small team here during the week, unless they have a conference on, so we quickly got to know Lorna, Joanne, Jackie, James and Emma and, as mentioned, it was like staying with friends as you chatted and got to know them.
Breakfast was either cooked or continental I would not say a choice as you could mix and match as you wished and timing was flexible.
There is no restaurant or bar however the kitchen fridge is stocked with cheese, chutney, beer and wine and you are allowed to help yourself along with the cakes. As we did not have a car it was not easy for us to eat out and Lorna and her team would often leave us a meal when we returned if they had held a function on the day. It would be on the side, wrapped in cling film with cooking instructions as required.
All this was included in the price and offered freely.
The location is ideal for ClatterBridge and the surrounding area with good connections to Chester, Liverpool, Port Sunlight and a number of small villages on the peninsular.
We did not have a car and the downside to this is that the location is not ideally suited to those without transport as the roads do not have footpaths and get quite busy. We did manage a walk on one of the days we stayed but made sure it was on a sunny day and it was early. We did know this however before we booked but those intending to stay without transport will need to appreciate this.
If you are staying here whist undergoing hospital treatment a taxi ride is 5 minutes and the bus services from ClatterBridge were good and connected with trains and we were able to get around without any problems.
Lorna, the owner, has spent a lot of time in hotels over the years and recalled the nights sat in a room with a bed with a sandwich and her vision for Mere Brook was what she would wish to stay in and be treated. In this regard she has succeded in achieving accommodation that I personally have found to be unique and have travelled a lot over the years.
As the title of this review states - when was the last time you checked out and hugged the person in front of you and promised to keep in touch!
Our stay here certainly made, what was a testing time for us, a pleasurable one and we look forward to returning under better circumstances in future
