“Safari tent residents for the jubilee weekend”
Reviewed June 15, 2012

This was our first time "camping" with our 2 children aged 8months and 2.5 yrs and we all had a brilliant time. The tent was spotless, well furnished ( v comfy beds!) and in a great location at the top of the field.

Everything was provided from wine glasses, lanterns and matches to light the fire!

The farm is beautifully maintained and Becky and John were fantastic hosts, nothing was too much trouble and they were very welcoming.

Our daughter loved feeding the chickens and collecting freshly laid eggs. Maybe next time she'll have the courage to ride the pony!

Showers clean and compost loo really not a problem!

Cuckoo down farm s very well located with Escot and Bicton Gardens within a few miles, both great days out with the kids if it's not beach weather!

We ate at the pea green boat in sidmouth ( as recommended in the folder provided) and it was great, and v reasonably priced.

All in all a great place to stay and very comfortable tent - and warm with the log burner!

We have just had a fantastic holiday, six adults, five children and a dog all had a brilliant time despite the weather! The yurts are lovely and sweet and very comfortable even with 11 people and a dog inside trying to keep dry.
The children loved exploring the woods and caught a baby trout in the stream, they rode the pony, fed the lamb and collected eggs from the chickens. We took walkie talkies which were great fun when the kids went off exploring in the woods but always felt they were very safe. We collected wood for camp fires and had bbq's.
Kitchen is very well equipped and the compost loo isn't as bad as I thought! (we agree with the toilet in the shower block.)
Becky, John and Will were very welcoming and helpful, will definitely return.

Hello!

Thanks very much for the lovely review, we really appreciate you taking the time. Boy we have had challenging weather this spring/summer but really lovely guests. We are so glad we put in the raised wooden floors in the yurts this year, they have kept everything good and dry for everyone.
We are thinking hard about putting a toilet in or near the shower block. John says it is not the most simple plumbing prospect to say the least but we think it is do-able and hopefully will be sorted out before too long. We are also getting some hot water bottles, though it has stopped raining now, honest!

Best wishes,

Becky John and the kids

We stayed in the new safari tent with three children and a dog, and had a fantastic time. The severe weather warning cut our holiday short by a day, but we still enjoyed it immensely!
The beds were super comfy, the kids ran around the fields until they tired themselves out, and we enjoyed the setting sun (when it emerged) with a glass of wine on the terrace - perfect.
The kids loved their pony ride, and it was great that we could let our dog off the lead - he had a really good holiday too.
I would add to what someone else has said here, and suggest that a loo in the shower block would be the icing on the cake.
All in all, a very successful first foray into the world of camping - we're looking forward to coming back next year already! Thank you Becky and John for creating such a lovely peaceful haven.

We took our three boys for their first trip to a yurt. We all had so much fun and packed a lot in to the long weekend. The boys loved having the freedom to run around in the large field and wood, collect wood to make a camp fire, go on a pony ride, feed the chickens and stroke the little lamb. We liked the fact that it is unspoilt, quiet and safe and the yurts aren't squashed together.

We were a bit chilly a night but once we realised we had to keep stoking the woodburner we were fine. Next time we'll bring hot water bottles!

I arranged to visit the brilliant Reiki therapist who lived just up the road and spent a very relaxing hour being healed, soothed and energised.

We also visited the excelled Escot house and gardens where we saw everything from otters to owls, climbed trees, overcame fears and did the huge drop slide and generally had a great day out.

The Golden Lion at Tipton St George was the setting for a birthday lunch and the food was delicious and service couldn't be faulted.

All round we had a brilliant weekend and cannot wait to come back again for more fun, reiki and possibly some fishing.

Set in a very peaceful and beautiful surrounding (take a look at the view from the top of the woods) Cuckoo Down Farm is a great place to go for a bit of "glamping".
We went with 2 other families and had a great time - we didn't really see the kids (ages from 2.5 to 5.5!) for 4 days as they were constantly running around and playing in the field and woods.

The kitchens and Yurts are very well maintained and very well equipped - just what you need so you don't have to remember to take everything! The beds were all comfy and we all slept very well, even with the cold!

We went at the beginning of April and it was flippin freezing first thing in the morning, but after the sun came over the hill behind the yurts it was lovely.

The only improvement I'd make (and we fed this feedback to the owners) was that it needs a toilet at the shower block - otherwise it's a loooong walk back to the yurts with small children who always need the loo at the wrong time!

Becky and John were very friendly and accomodating and Becky organised a Pony ride for the 6 kids which they all enjoyed very much.

All in all a great week with great friends and in a great location.

P.S. thought of another improvement - a communual space in the field would be good for the occasions when the yurts are all rented by the same group - we took a gazebo to use for communual eating/drinking so if you're in the same situation as us then take one if you can.

Hello,
Thank you very much for your lovely review, much appreciated. We really like your ideas and will endeavour to include them this season on the farm. I think the loo by the showers is a great idea and we will put that at the top of our list. We also hope to have a communal area in some fashion this season also. Yes it was literally freezing, a thick frost, on several mornings this month - what an April we have had this year - come back in June, we still have spaces! Best wishes to you all and thanks for being such lovely guests, Becky and John Sheaves

As the previous people have already said the owners are such lovely people that they alone deserve 5 stars! The yurts are lovely and all the beds and bedding very clean and comfortable. The fire was very efficient and kept us warm enough although it is sensible in our British climate to dress in "layers". Showers were large and water warm and nice to have a fridge/freezer that would be useful in hot weather (if it ever arrives.) The kitchen had enough of everything and composting toilets were fine. Our grandchildren loved the pony ride, feeding the chickens smoothing the lambs and playing with Moss & Lily. At the end we were beaten by the weather when the wind and rain were unbelievable but we kept dry in the Yurt until the children had had enough (they are 5 & 7) and even I was a little worried about getting home! My tip would be to bring folding picnic tables ...we took 2 and there was room to put them up inside and 6 sit round on the chairs providede by Becky if it looks like rain. We also had a great day out at the World of Country Life which is about 15 miles away. Thanks to Becky we will be back..the weather could NEVER be that bad again!

Thank you very much for your really nice review., it is much appreciated. You were here when it rained solidly for 30 hours - hitting all the national headlines and putting east Devon on flood alert. And usually we are (honestly) in a bit of a rain shadow here and tend to be dry compared to the rest of the South West!
Anyway, good on you for making the best of unprecedently dire British weather, this April has been challenging weather-wise but brightened up by some really lovely visitors. We will see you next time when , as you say, it cannot possibly rain so hard again!
Best wishes,

Becky and John Sheaves and family

This was a great family holiday! We have 2 daughters who loved our 4 night stay - there were tears in the car when we left!!
Becky provides a warm and friendly welcome - the weather was truly awful but we had a ball - not many holidays you can say that about. Loved the fact that we could have a pony ride; feed the hens, play with the dogs and run around a great big meadow - even if we were covered head to toe in wet weather gear. Compost loo worked really well (I was surprised) - showers were ok - kitchen was well stocked and worked well even in the rain!
Will be back - so don't think you can get better than that!
