We arrived for a three day safari on what felt like the hottest day of the year! Needless to say before we got more than 10 minutes out on our fist safari we had to turn back because of the massive thunder and hail storm - so dramatic and brilliant! We went on to see so much during our three days - what an experience! Loved that this was a relatively 'small' game lodge . Great atmosphere and wonderful rangers. Would recommend to anyone. And malaria free!

The River Lodge at Kareiga is simply amazing. Its five star treatment at its best. Your glass will never be empty and neither will your belly. The staff are so efficient and friendly and the food is as good as we got anywhere in SA. The whole setting is surreal and the lodges are simply fantastic. We had two great nights drinking into the early hours in front of a big fire with our new friends from SA, USA, the UK, Holland and of course all the Irish who were last to bed every night. One would have to see this place to fully appreciate it. Delightful.

We recently spent 3 nights at River Lodge, our first safari and an unforgetable experience. Our choice of stay was largely based on location and tying a safari in with the Garden Route. Given one or two of the poorer reviews, we were very pleasantly surprised. Being a reserve, as expected the vast area (9000ha) was enclosed by fences and there were 2 seperated areas, one with known predators and one without known predators. Game drives included passing through gates to enter the different reserves but once inside the landscape was immence and beautiful. Our ranger (Doc) was excellent, his knowledge of the animals, birds and environment was fantastic, and he was as brilliant at pointing out the small things (dung beetles rolling dung unsuccessfully uphill) as getting us close encounters with so many of the large animals. We saw all but the leopard out of the big 5 and so so much more (too much to list). The food and wine was also fantastic, welcomed cooked breakfasts on return from the morning drive, and a beautiful variety of game meats and sea food for the other meals during our stay. We were fortunate to have a group who were excellent company and thoroughly enjoyed sharing the drives and meal times with them and the ranger.
The accomodation and Lodge was very rustic and comfortable and we enjoyed returning back from our evening drives to hot chocolate and drinks by the open fire before dinner. For us, 3 days was about the right length of stay, leaving us with a taste for more in the future.

Actual visit was April 2007 & April 2009, i have only recently started looking at trip advisor and decided to add this as it was so good. We have been twice as I am writing this, and would go again if funds were easy to come by. If you are thinking of going here do it, it is fantastic. From start to finish you will be amazed. The food, staff, Rangers, game drives, setting, lodge, location, all fab. We visited Kariega at the end of our South Africa tour, as we wanted to leave Africa on a high, most do Safari first but we like it to end with. It was my 50th in 2007 and after Kariega we vowed to return and did in 2009. 1st visit was 3 nights 6 game drives and 2nd was 4 nights so we managed 8 game drives in total, 9 if you count the drive back to the entrance as we were blessed with an appearence of several different animals to see us off, and a big thanks to Mike our Ranger. Gosh it was just as hard to leave the 2nd time as it was the 1st. Can't waite to return some day.

We stayed in the River lodge for my 50th birthday. Accomodation was superb, food and wine excellent, as was the service. Did feel regimented though, guests are required to stay with the same group for the duration of their stay. This is fine if you are with the right people. Some of our "group" took over the safaris with their own needs, which the ranger went along with (dare I say it, for the tip!). Having to eat breakfast and dinner in the same group was also tedious, again it depends who you are with.On a more positive note, do have to say we met a great couple from Ireland who added humour to the proceedings!

We had a wonderful stay here.
It's fully inclusive, including the mini bar which is refreshed each morning.
The staff were very attentive, and the place itself singularly special.
We rose each morning after 5am for coffee and muffin before taking a 3 hour safari drive, then back to a splendid breakfast - continental and english.
The main building has bar, dining, library, lounges and verandah overlooking the Bushman's River.
The Safari drives in open top 4.2 litre Toyota Landcruisers are quite exhausting. There is a second safari drive after 4pm and before dinner back at the lodge at 8pm.

Our Ranger, Terry, was superb.

If I had any gripes, it would be that their idea of cuisine for vegetarians is very limited; there is no understanding of the need for protein in a vegetarian diet or how this can be facilitated; we were pretty much served what the omnivores had minus the meat / fish.

This was our first safari and it was an amazing experience.
The private chalets were beautifully decorated very spacious and we even overlooked a waterhole which was fun for watching animals from our private terrace.
The game drives were excellent and our ranger, Mike was extremely knowledgeable about all kinds of animals/birds/insects/plants - he made sure that we all got a lot out of the drives and that we had a variety of animals. We even went hippo tracking on our last drive which was exciting (and amazing when we found them!)
The morning drives mean wake up calls at 5.15am which seems very early but is worth it. Coffee/juice/chocolate muffins are handed out before the first drive and a full cooked breakfast is provided when we return from the morning drive.
The food was fantastic. For breakfast and dinner, you eat with the group who share the game drives which was good to share experiences and speak to the ranger more.\
I would definitely recommend Kariega to anyone as we had a ball and will certainly look to do a safari again
