Kariega Game Reserve - All Lodges

Our Kariega experience at The River Lodge was exceptional in every respect. The online booking and contact with reservation staff was warm and friendly, as was our welcome at River Lodge. We could not ask for more in any area of service. Our Ranger, Zolani Mofu, was just great fun, very knowledgable, and flexible. His willingness to show us as much as possible was really appreciated. Lodge staff are terrific, and very competent. The food was very good, and the accommodations excellent. We saw all the animals we expected and our expectations on each safari drive was exceeded, with great photo ops. You don't need a long lens at this reserve, you get very close to all the animals. You will need a hat and warm jacket, because the morning starts, and evening finishes of the game drives are quite cold. Free wifi is great! We met great fellow guests, and made great friendships - that makes it a great game reserve experience for us. Nice people and animals! There may be bigger reserves, but this one is just like coming to visit someone's home.

Room Tip: We had Lodge #6, and very often had ostrich, giraffe and impala outside our room on different occasi...

My 14 year old son and I had a fantastic safari experience at Kariega. Beautiful location, the property was sizeable enough for it to feel wild and real, yet not so big that you had to spend the whole day driving just to find something. The animals were beautiful and plentiful - lots of babies which was perfect! Our ranger Louis was fantastic - likeable, knowledgeable and keen to please. Accommodation was spacious and a little basic but fine for us. Food was delicious and plentiful - very impressive. Highly recommended

This was the last leg of our honeymoon in South Africa. We spent 3 nights in a main lodge chalet which was great and felt authentic. The food in the restaurant was great and we enjoyed food by the campsite on the 2nd night. Great atmosphere and good fun. We had 4 game drives with Matt the Ranger who knew pretty much everything there is to know about animals and nature in general. We saw loads of animals including 4 of the big five. No leopard. It was wicked. Digger the giraffe hanging out by the chalets on our way home from the restaurant on our last night just topped it all off nicely. Wonderful.

We arrived just after heavy rain. The staff here just could not do enough for us. They really bent over backwards. I think the gratuity at the end showed. It really helps if management is around. It really showed. The game viewing was most certainly superior, and trust me I have been many. Food wise the kitchen really outdid itself as we had difficult clients. Well done

I recently stayed on the Game Reserve for two nights and had four game drives in this time. There were three of us and we were in a four bedroom chalet! Each having our own bedroom and bathroom. The chalets were well equipped! There were extra adapters and even bug spray! There was a log fire and TV and a very comfy lounge area. The chalets were kept very clean and well maintained. The whole experience was fantastic. On arrival we were met by monkeys on the balcony! They were very shy and ran away with any noise. The game drives were fantastic with our ranger Simon. He was very knowledgeable of the animals and was readily able answer any questions. We were lucky (or unlucky!!?) to have the amazing experience of being surrounded by a herd of elephants. It was a highlight of the trip! We also got up close to the lions, the rhino, the hippos, zebras etc. We only managed to see three of the big five but others had spotted the buffalo. No mention of the Leopard!! The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed after dinner by the fire with a Savanna (South African cider). The spa was very nice and relaxing as was the pool area. The restaurant was fantastic with excellent food and choice. The staff were so friendly and obliging there. We could not speak more highly of this trip. It was fantastic. Thanks Kariega and thanks to Simon our ranger! :)

Room Tip: Our chalet was in the Main Lodge. It was chalet 14! Very big and comfy. I think some have private pl...

I read some of the negative feedback from other travellers who I can only assume had a out of the ordinary experience. We travelled to Kariega with 4 excited children in tow, it is easily accessible from PE and is brilliantly located for the beautiful life guard kept beaches of Kenton on Sea. Main lodge chalet accommodation was fine - really felt like we were out in the bush, perhap because we were! Monkeys in the back garden one day! It was clean, spacious and unfortunately (after 10 days on doing without) had a TV. The game drives were great, brilliant guide who was very knowledgable able the animals - loved the relaxed approach to sundowners....particulalry as we had just been tracking lions. The fact the this reserve is in hilly bush make the 4x4 rides an event in themselves, kids loved it. Saw all we wanted to see up close (with the exception of leopards) a pride of lions to ourselves, elephants up close and too close for comfort and giraffes keeping guard at the reception. Food was fine - good choices, very relaxed and great views - really like the open fires in the evenings. Drinks wer more expensive than out of Reserve but reasonable compared to UK prices. It is not the Savannah, but for a young family wanting to see lots of animals in the wild its perfect! Its a great place for surf and safari!

Room Tip: Break up your drives with a visit to Kenton on Sea - you will be able to finish morning Safari, spen...

Excellent news! We are so glad that you and your family loved your stay with us. We think we have a magical location, especially with the sea so close and two rivers to enjoy. Thanks for the great advice to suggest to people to visit the beach after their morning safari! We love your term "surf and safari" we may just have to use that in all our summer season marketing! We are a family owned and operated lodge working hard to provide great experiences to all our visitors. We're so glad you took the time to post about your stay.
Kind regards,

Visited July 2012 with my girlfriend after 5 days in Cape Town.

I'd give this a 4.5 rating if I could. But I can't so rounded it up.

As soon as we drove into the park gates we got a good vibe about the place. The accomodation was very atmospheric with a luxury hut feel. The room was enormous, the view was vast. The lodge staff were very welcoming.

The real highlight was the game drives. I had done this before in Sabi Sands, but it was a first safari trip for my girlfriend. Being July, it was very cold, especially at sunrise - so ensure you are dressed with 2 pairs of socks, woolyhat etc, and be prepared as if its minus 10. If it's too hot, you can always take layers off. If you are warm, you can sit back and enjoy the marvel. We were lucky enough to park up in the middle of a 20-strong herd of elephants, and even saw lions tucking into a fresh kill. We saw everything we wanted to see, just the leopard was evasive. Temba, our driver was excellent, really good insight and a genuinely lovely man.

The food was top rate, but note, you also need to wrap up warm for dinner as there are no walls to the building.

As I said, I had been to Sabi Sands a few years prior. Sabi Sands was better due to the park being bigger and having more variety, plus it had leopards. But Sabi is further away and more expensive, so if it doesn't work out, Kariega is an excellent duputy.
