“Pets are welcome!”
Reviewed July 31, 2011

We stayed here because pets are welcome. Makes a huge difference when you have a dog as so many places don't welcome pets. We requested a ground floor room in the Riverside building, which we were given - a few minutes walk from the main hotel. A door led out directly to a small patio area which was perfect for letting our wee dog in and out. Small table and chairs outside with lovely views to the river and fields beyond. Inside the room it was just a tad dated, but there were two comfortable armchairs and a small table by the window; much better than having to sit on the bed all the time. Coffee, tea and shortbread available in the room and supplies were replenished during the evening. It was very peaceful, quiet and tranquil which was great; either the walls were well insulated or our neighbours were very quiet! No doors banging, no loud TV, no voices echoing down the corridors, just peace and quiet. Breakfast the following morning was good, not as much choice as I had hoped, but nice all the same. All the staff were very friendly. There are some good walks around the grounds of the hotel which was perfect for our dog. Would certainly go back.

We stayed for 3 nights on a dinner bed and breakfast basis. It would normally have been out of our price league but they were offeringa 25% reduction offer. The hotel is in an excellent peaceful location with large grounds. We had room 10 [Inverness[ which was large with a 4 poster bed , a large bathroom with separate bath and shower and a wonderfull view over the nearby river Tay. All the staff , many east European were very friendly. The head waiter , who was Scottish was particularly pleasant and very professional and efficient. The breakfast buffet and cooked breakfast on offer was one of the most extensive we have experienced. The evening meals were excellent. The quality and presentation were of the higest quality and in our opinion compared favourably with a Michelin restaurant we had visited some weeks previously!
All in all a very pleasant experience and one we would like to repeat as soon as funds allow!

We'd consider ourselves regulars at Ballathie (once every couple of months for lunch, or sunday lunch). A few months ago there was a noticeable difference in the quality of the food (the service has always been really good).

The dishes didn't seems to be as fresh and exciting as they used to be on our previous half dozen visits. Then we discovered they'd changed the chef...what a shame!

We'll go back, and fingers crossed they are back to their usual high standards and lovely cooking. Here's hoping...

Stayed for 2 nights in the Annex of the Hotel. Its in beautiful grounds and we had lovely views to the river from our balcony. Sadly the weather meant we didn't spend much time out there which was the reason we'd booked a room there rather than in the main hotel. Very clean and comfortable room, great power shower, and about a 200 yard walk to the main building for breakfast and dinner. The Annex has the feeling of a business centre - conference rooms on ground floor (though the bedrooms would be very much better than you'd expect from the normal residential setting). A bit quiet when we were there (think we were the only couple in the Annex on the first night and only one of two the following night) so you might want to stay in the main hotel if you'd like things a bit livelier and want to avoid the walk.

The dinner on both nights was fantastic - the mix of flavours was amazing and there's a wine list to suit a range of pockets. It was a real treat and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. The man in the bar could have been a little more attentive - we had to make a point of asking for drinks on the 2nd night because he was busy chatting to the only other 2 guests in the room, and the fact he called me "dear" the first night didn't endear him to me!

Breakfast on the first morning was a bizarre experience. We were really thirsty (perhaps because of the great bottle of wine the previous night) but you had to order fruit juice and await its arrival. That morning it took about 10 minutes to be asked what we wanted and another 5-10 to bring the fruit juice. Not sure why it just couldn't be out on the buffet table. The menu said that the buffet included meats and cheeses but none were evident. I asked about them and the waitress disappeared saying "I'll speak to the chef". About 15 minutes later I was presented with a huge plate absolutely covered in meat - several thick slices each of beef and chicken and a pile of shredded ham.....and nothing else. Not exactly breakfast-sized or particularly appetising - it was one of those platefuls that you couldn't even have started! I said it wasn't what I'd expected and that I would just stick to fruit and yoghurt. I was then asked twice by the waitress who had taken my order if she could "wrap my meat for me" - I said no thanks. Someone at the next table asked for the local honey which was similarly mentioned on the menu and eventually got it - when her toast was cold and the same waitress had said " I understand you want honey too". Felt like we were both getting told off. Don't get me wrong the breakfast staff were great too (including this waitress)....but there seemed to be misunderstandings about what you could expect would be available, and such a difference between the presentation, delicacy and smooth-running experience at dinner compared to what happened, was available and was presented at breakfast. Luckily, day two breakfast was much more striaghtforward (I just didn't even mention meat and cheeses!).

A lovely place, very concerned with customer service. If breakfast (and bar service) were even vaguely like the rest of the experience, it would all be 5 star across the board.

My wife and i live in Blairgowrie which is 10 minutes away. We had the 4 course dinner here one Friday evening simply because Ballathie is without question the best quality dining experience in Perthshire. Chef Andrew Wilkie has a remarkable talent for generating tastebud sensations. My main was fillet steak which i had med rare, the quality was fantastic and the steak simply melted under my knife. I look forward to our next visit which will be very soon.

Our daughter had her wedding and reception here on 30th April and we took over the whole hotel including bedrooms. We had 90 guests plus a further 20 for a ceilidh in the evening. The planning advice was thorough - nothing was left to chance. On the day, the manager and staff were attentive but not obtrusive. We had drinks on the lawn by the river, the meal was first class, the day ran very smoothly. The bride and groom had a very happy day and the guests enjoyed the celebration. I can recommend Ballathie for its scenic setting by the River Tay and the excellent, friendly service from all the staff.

We visited the hotel for Afternoon Tea to take advantage of a newspaper offer and to quote 'Settle into the comfort of our Drawing Room for an elegant afternoon of delicate sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and tempting cakes........as you look out over the lawns of the estate to the River Tay below.' unquote as described on the hotel web-site. Sadly, it will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. It was especially disappointing as we had made the booking, almost two months before our visit for 4pm in the afternoon to avoid clashing with lunchtime visitors. There were no tables in the Drawing Room as they were occupied by a group of ladies who had adjourned there after lunch to chat amongst themselves (the reason for our 4pm booking). Some of the ladies could have easily been asked to move to an alternative room within the hotel and my request to wait until a table in the Drawing Room became available was followed up by a serving of Afternoon Tea in the inner hall - bizarre! The sandwiches, scones and cakes were, at best, average and our quote 'Wide selection of teas and coffees' unquote was from a choice of "Tea or coffee?" There was no 'service' to speak of and our experience brought a very pleasant few days in the Highlands to an abrupt and disappointing end. Our 'Afternoon Tea' was not the one described on the web-site and sailed close to the wind as far as advertising standards are concerned. Buyer beware.
