“Pleasantly surprised”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2013 via mobile

The rather fancy food descriptions on the menu made me feel rather apprehensive that the meal would be trendy but lacking substance. Wrong!! The pea and ham soup was amazing(if a tad salty), full of shredded ham and more like a mains than starter. The burger and "thriced" cooked chips was a revelation, tasting better than any proper steak i have ever eaten. Everything else my friends tasted was equally spot on. Service was understated and efficient, and the bill was sensible. We just wish we could have managed to finish our plates, but we couldn't! The intriguing desserts will have to wait for another day. The final consensus of our party of four.... Apart from a lot of background noise from a busy chatty dining room, probably one of the best meals we have had.

“Rip Off”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 17, 2013

Living locally decided to go there for lunch with a friend who was visiting. On entering we were told there was ONLY white bread for sandwiches - 12.15 and with a shop selling local bread across the road!!!. The sandwiches were small, the filling adequate and we ordered a portion of chips each as well, though we had to wait as they only delivered one initially - a small basket looking pretenciously like a fryer basket with 12 chips each! We had one small white wine and a soda water and lime and the cost.................£29.85, talk about a rip off and they had the nerve to charge us £2.50 service charge. Certainly won't be using it again even though we can walk to it!!

“No Christmas Cheer”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2013

Last year we had work Christmas meal here and it was second to none. This year however the entire meal was a disapointment. The menu in no way reflects the food you get.Large plates with meagre tasteless portions. The Christmas turkey dinner was a large mound in the middle of the dish which when dismantled revealed over sweet over cooked vegetables topped with Turkey slices all served Luke warm and totally tasteless.Pudding was cold whether it christmas pudding or the ginger crumb I had the misfortune to order. The cheese and biscuits had neither cheese or biscuits upon the plate.Perhaps the Chef should stop shaping everything into a quenelle and concentrate on taste.Service however was excellent.

“mixed feelings”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 5, 2013

Stayed here for 2 nights when we went to Houghon exhibition. Wonderfully friendly and very efficient management. Rooms were very stylish and very comfortable. Great decor everywhere in the building in a lovely simple way . I just loved the great selection of books everywhere . But the food was a bit of a disappointment. Service was excellent and very efficient.
Coffe at breakfast was poor.
