Review of Shoab beach

Shoab beach
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Shoab Beach is one of the most beautiful, remote and untouched beaches that I have ever visited. The waters and sand are pristine and you have the whole beach to yourself. You need to take a boat ride to Shoab from Qalansiyah and the trip is out of this world. We stopped to snorkel on the way to Shoab and saw everything from Eagle Rays to Sharks and superpods of Dolphins...and then we got to relax and have lunch with a local man in his wooden shack just off the beach....this place is a must before everybody finds out about it. Enjoy

From Qalansiyah most tour operators can book you a trip with a local fisherman who will take you on a boat journey to Shoab. By far the best option is to travel early in the morning when the dolphins are playing out on the edge of the bay. Bring your own snorkel mask and fins and you'll get the truly unique and awe inspiring experience of swimming with pods of upto 150 spinner dolphins, hearing the music of their clicks buzzing under the water - they are friendly, safe and very curious and put on spectacular shows above water with impossible leaps and acrobatic turns. This was so good we went back and did it again - costing us $70 to hire the boat and captain for the day.

In addition to the dolphins there is also world class snorkelling available along the cliff faces in the ethereal turquoise waters; we saw moray eels, groupers, sea snakes, sting rays, manta rays, black and white tip reef sharks and hordes tropical fish too numerous to name. The waters here are crytal clear, totally unspoilt and have barely been touched by tourism - I can honestly say that the journey alone was one of the best experiences of my life.

Shoab itself is the classic picture postcard beach that Thailand wishes it that it was and probably once was before it was destroyed by unmanaged tourism. A four or five mile stretch of pure white sand will be yours alone and the colour of the water is utterly mesmerising. If you discuss with your captain or tour guide beforehand then you can usually arrange to have lunch with Abdullah - a local in Shoab who looks as if he has been handpicked straight out of an adventure novel - a truly wise looking old man. In short - do this and reminisce about it for the rest of your life. It is doable even without a guide if you head to the fishing village nect to Qalansiyah and talk to the local fisherman, though your Arabic may need to be pretty sharp. Otherwise, be sure to ask your tour guide to do this, you absolutely will not regret it!

It takes 45-50 minutes boat trip from Qalansiyah to get there but was not bored during the trip. The little boat glided very close to the rocks which ledging the shore and had time watch the birds and turtles and was shocked of the fantastic, crystal clear blue-green ocean - similar you can only find in Seychelles or Maldives.
When we arrived to Shoab my jaw dropped. Minimum 5 kilometer long, white sandy beach and we were the only human being there - I guessed. The water is great, no wawes although the weather was windy.
After we finished swimming my guide shown me a little hut where an old local guy lives. We visited him and he invited us for a tea. The ambience was fantastic. I was in one of the most beautiful beach and I ever seen, I was the only tourist there and drunk tea with the locals. There was only a little conversation amongst us but the entire visit was under such a superlunary tranquility that I could not beleive I ever had a stressful life in Europe.

It has always been the dream of my life. And Socotra, the island of many wonders made my dream come true. I have swam with dolphins!! I saw them during a boat trip to Shoab beach, often you can meet them on that part of the coast but they are always in a hurry. They jump, play, eat..but this time they were looking for somebody to play with..and it was meee!! no word can describe my joy and feelings while they came closer smiling at me.. for 10 minutes they came and went in a dance of joy and happiness.
I'm currently living on the island for some months so feel free to contact me if you want to know more about it.

Socotra where all the dreams come true!!
