First time back to the Kirkstile Inn for 10 years. It used to be Cumberland sausage and chips but things have changed - the old games room is now a warm and comfy dining area, the menu is extensive but not too much like a 'Gastro Pub' - good to see local produce still being used and like 10 years ago the beer selection is superb. Most of the seating is set over to dining, so if you've just come in for a pint you might be standing. Food was well presented and substantial - service very friendly. Great selection of deserts and nice to see sticky toffee pudding still on the menu. Of course unlike Cumberland sausage and chips things are a bit more expensive.

Made to feel very welcome even though we want in the wrong door. All staff very friendly and helpful. Food just lovely and locally sourced too. A bit hard to find in the dark and driving rain but well worth the trouble. Great night.

We visited for the weekend with friends and had a lovely stay, thank you. Would come again and would recommend.

There were a lot of things we loved about this place
...the food, we ate in the bar both nights we stayed and the standard far exceeded expectations, just fantastic! breakfast was great too
...the bar, lovely and cosy, good selection of wines for a pub and lots of local beers
...the setting, total escapism, relaxed as soon as we arrived and great walking from the doorstep, didn't need to use the car which was great
...the staff were helpful and friendly

However
...the shower was awful, warm but not much more than a trickle
...the rooms could do with updating although clean and comfortable, we knew this though, what you see on the website is what you get

My husband and I stayed at The Kirkstile Inn last weekend to celebrate my sister-in-laws birthday. We planned on walking the Buttermere Horseshoe & there were 5 couples staying altogether. We had a standard room with was very nice. Clean and well appointed, no TV but it's good to do without a tv every now and again. There was a tv in the communal lounge area, which was also nice. We had a variety of rooms booked so had a good look around them all. The rooms outside the main building were very nice with a private lounge area inside the room. I found the bed quite uncomfortable and woke a few times through the night. Also as we were in the main building you could hear people in the bar, we did have an early night on the Friday though. Lovely views from the bedroom, tea & coffee facilities too. We had to set off early on the Saturday and needed breakfast at 7am, the dining room opens at 8am so we had to just help ourselves. There was no tea/coffee facilities in the dining room so we had to carry our drinks down from the room and cereal was all nice but a sausage sandwich would have been nice! Saturday morning we had a full english. Bacon & sausage was lovely but some beans, fried bread or a hash brown would have made it delicious. We ate in the Kirkstile both nights and can not fault the food at all. Fillet steak was one of the best we have ever had.
All in all it was a lovely weekend, not a 4* hotel but that's not what we were expecting. We would definately stay here again.

Room Tip: All rooms were very nice but the Premier rooms have a bit more space

My wife and I and a group of friends completed the Coast to Coast cycle route on our route across the Lake District we called at The Kirkstile Inn for lunch. The location and Inn were stunning. Everything about the Inn was perfect, good food and service, rustic stone and slate charm, aged beams and a comforting warmth oozed from the very fabric of the building. It was an obvious choice to re visit for our 1st wedding anniversary celebration. The absolute peak of our all too brief stay was the "residents dining room". A choice menu prepared from local ingredients was truly a taste bonanza, an enchanting dining experience, well prepared and well served........ don't miss it, a real luxury at value for money prices.

The Kirkstile is an archytipical Lake District Inn. Remote and hard to find in a blessedly quiet corner of this beautiful county, it`s well worth seeking out. We have been several times over the years and it has lived up to our memories every time. Walking or driving it`s not easy to locate but well worth the effort. I had memories of the splendid steak and ale pie from our last visit 3 or 4 years ago and thank goodness the Inn has kept this favourite. On this occasion our daughter opted for the Ploughman`s Lunch which was as good as any I`ve seen and which can be mediocre. Not this time! This is good quality wholesome pub fare served by friendly and welcoming staff who obviously work hard at keeping this remote hostelry in business. Good range of genuinely local beers to go with the food. Great base for countless walks. Would love to stay at this pub for a weekend but fear it is being priced beyond us by the New World Wealthy so can`t comment on the accomodation. Lovely terraced area at the front with great view of Melbreak and surrounding fells but this pub is so cosy you`d just want to stay inside!Dogs welcome in the pub up to dog bedtime for some reason (?)- our Jack Russell spotted a red squirrel in the car park but soon saw it off!

We made a slight detour to visit this pub - recommended by Lonely Planet.

It was a drizzly damp day and when we walked in - there was a lovely fire burning in the main room. It's a very old pub and just so cozy and quaint we were happy we made the detour.

We had lunch and really liked the food, service was good and atmosphere was unbeatable.
