“Cookery masterclass”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2013

My husband and I enjoyed the cookery class with Tim Hamer. It was great to see an excellent chef in action and he was so approachable, and answered every question asked of him. The whole day was a great experience, from the tour around the Castle with David and an excellent two course lunch - the sweet was delicious! Many thanks again - Jackie and Richard

If beautiful scenery, a historic and grand building, 5 star food and professional and friendly staff are on your request list for the perfect wedding venue then look no further.

We have just had our Wedding Reception at Hazlewood Castle and cannot speak highly enough of our experience. Our perfect day was thanks to the whole team who looked after us and ensured we felt special from beginning to end. From the first time we went to look around Hazlewood we were made to feel very welcome. The "historical" tour by Steve was informative and enjoyable, and made us realise just how much character Hazlewood Castle has which really sets it apart from other venues. When we did the “circuit” of possible Wedding venues in and around the region, we visited other grand properties/hotels but often felt that their approach was quite corporate, and that really we were just another statistic. In contrast, we have always felt that the staff at Hazlewood really cared, and the senior management were real people who wanted to talk to us and showed an interest in us. During all the planning and organising, our wedding manager Melissa has been absolutely brilliant, and so professional - we have always felt that our big day was in safe hands. She always replied promptly to our emails and helped us shape our ideas. Although we had a dedicated wedding manager for the day of the wedding Melissa still came to personally greet us and check everything was going as it should.

On the day itself when we arrived from the Church, the grounds just looked phenomenal - totally idyllic. We were blessed with beautiful weather and all our guests were stood in the courtyard having drinks and enjoying themselves. We were greeted by Georgie, our wedding manager for the day, who was always on hand and attentive to all our needs. She had a reassuring, positive and calm manner about her, and this gave us confidence that everything would go exactly as it should.

Throughout the day, our guests complemented us on our choice of venue and especially the quality of the food, and the well organised team who served them at our tables. We were confident that the food was going to be good as we had already had the pleasure of sampling it at our menu tasting evening. It was here that the head chef Tim came out personally to meet us and discuss our possible choices and gave us the benefit of his experience which helped us to finalise our menu perfectly. We had several comments from guests that his Sticky Toffee Pudding was the best they had ever tasted! As well as a fabulous three-course meal, our evening buffet was plentiful, and well presented. Again, we received numerous positive comments about the quality of the food, particularly the bacon rolls.

We had the pleasure of staying in the four poster bedroom ‘Elderflower’ which is just one of the hotel's honeymoon suites. It was also a nice touch and a very pleasant surprise to find that the Hotel had put a bottle of champagne in our room too.

Breakfast the next morning was set both indoor and outdoor as the weather was still fine. We enjoyed our breakfast outside looking out at the castle gardens. The breakfasts were all cooked to order, which we think is really one of the signs of a quality hotel rather than the “breakfast buffet”, which you get at a lot of hotels. My Wife had the scrambled egg and smoked salmon (with generous portion sizes) and I had the full English. Whilst I don’t usually have a large cooked breakfast I thoroughly enjoyed it and think you could really tell the quality of the local produce used.

Following breakfast, as we and our guests were checking out, we never felt rushed at any point and we were given time and assistance to pack all our things into our cars and take them away. In fact, it was again senior management who helped us put our wedding flowers into water, providing glasses and boxes to make everything a little easier.

We would not hesitate to recommend Hazlewood Castle and it seems very apt to us that it is situated on ‘Paradise Lane’. Thank you to all the team who ensured we had a perfect day.

I went to the Cookery Masterclass taken by Tim Hamer last week. Tim is friendly and approachable; he took time to explain what and why he was doing things and would take any questions. It was good to see a dish being prepared in front of us rather than seeing it on TV. The three dishes he showed us were simple to make, looked and tasted good.

This Masterclass is excellent and I would certainly recommend it and would do it again.

The whole package includes a tour of Hazelwood and a lunch - rack of lamb this time - very nice!

The total experience is excellent value and very well executed, the time seemed to fly by.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your Masterclass with Tim our Executive Head Chef he really enjoys the teaching aspect behind his career, in fact he has done in the past.

The Masterclasses are designed to encourage people to have the confidence in cooking and trying new things rather than blind with science and we are chuffed that we have the balance right.

We hope that you have fun cooking and come back for another class in the future.

Best regards

My wife booked a one night stay with champagne, spa treatments & DBB staying in the Daisy suite in the court yard. The staff were excellent. very attentive without being intrusive. The food was also excellent both in presentation and quality. The grounds are stunning and very well kept. There are only two points that fail me rating the stay as excellent. The suite was large with a reception room, large bedroom, bathroom and lounge. However, the lounge windows had been painted over and would not open. We had to have a member of staff cut through the paint to open the windows as it was very hot weather. Noise from the adjacent farm right next to the room started early in the morning with tractors moving around and their reverse auditory warning signals were quite intrusive. The rooms were clean but rather tired. Antique chairs and sofa needed recovering to mask the stains on them and wall paper had damp marks around the windows. The bath plug did not fit and so the bath slowly drained as one sat in it. The room was next to the car park on the ground floor and this caused a little noise. However, in common with some other reviews, the venue is stunning and attracts wedding parties. During our stay, a wedding party had arrived in advance of the ceremony to take place on the following day. They spent from 12.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. drinking in the court yard and becoming more loud as the time progressed. Their location was just across from our room and certainly detracted from the ambiance and we chose to sit elsewhere rather than enjoy the pretty court yard and ponds from the chairs and table just outside of our lounge. Similarly, eating breakfast al fresco was a little disrupted on the following morning when some of the party descended and took up their excited intercourse at a volume again that all could hear.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We are an ideal location for weddings we try to ensure that all guests are individually treated so more often than not the wedding doesn't impact on other guests. The lovely weather has migrated guests to sit outside the building longer, but we try with 77 acres of woodland, landscape gardens and patios to still have quiet pockets around the grounds.

I have noted your comments regarding the room and we are working through a soft refurbishment programme at the moment to freshen up the rooms, our interior designer is currently working through wallpapers to suit the building, location and the individual feel of each room. I have a feeling its not going to be magnolia.

We hope that you will take the opportunity to come and visit us again if you are in this area.

Best Wishes

We stopped here as a break point between south England and Scotland. Absolutely lovely location, room, staff and food. The grounds are stunning. The staff were all charming and very helpful. Breakfast was a cut above the usual. We'll be back for a proper break next time.

I stayed here over the weekend, and everything was quite pleasant, nothing to complain about. however it was very clear that the focus of the hotel is the wedding market, and it permiates everything. grounds landscaped to do good wedding photos and the like. also, be careful in the restaurant. there are some low lampshades made of thick glass. i hit my head every single time I stood up, to laughter from everyobe

We are delighted that you overall enjoyed your stay and are sorry that you kept banging your head on the light shades, we will need to keep an eye out on them for future guests.

We do have the right location, building and grounds for weddings but we are delighted to cater for our individual guests and very much try to keep both in separate areas.

We hope to see you again

We stayed at Hazlewood the weekend that reviewer Kate N had her wedding there. We used to come fairly frequently when it was still a privately owned hotel and were always extremely pleased. Now I'm sorry to say it has lost the wow factor.
In need of some decorating in places, with young and inexperienced staff that try hard, but don't always succeed. The rooms are really only average for the price and the service, too.
List of niggles: we were not told there was a wedding on (unexpected noise levels; screaming and running kids); we had booked a picnic that was not ready upon arrival making us late for attending our open air performance; ordered a merlot and were given a Rose - if there is a choice of Red or Rose, ask the customer, dont assume; poached eggs at breakfast were solid
Bring back the old days!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we are sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay as much as before. We have owned the hotel now for 5 years and are currently going through a soft refurbishment programme to develop the rooms and public areas.

Due to the nature of the industry we do have a mixed age group working for us from 17 - 65 but they are all keen and very friendly. I have passed on these constructive comments to my Heads of Department to ensure we do not have a repeat of this simple errors.

We do hope that we have the chance to see you again soon.

Best wishes
