We got a voucher off AmazonLocal and dined at the Gunnery in Tarvin. Nice & handy with easy parking and a warm welcome from the staff. Very personal service but nothing too gushing, just nice and relaxed. We were shown to our table in the restaurant; wooden floors, high ceilings, a fire and candles. The waiters were polite and just had a naturally relaxed air about them.
Good choice of food on the menu and it stipulates a bit of a wait for the food as it's freshly prepared. We had to wait but it didn't matter as the staff were attentive and the atmosphere was great. The squid in chilli for a starter was divine and the corned beef hash, my boyfriend said, was delicious. He had steak, which was excellent and my spaghetti marinara was gorgeous. The shiraz and NZ sauvigon blanc, well, what else......excellent!
We would definitely go back. Highly recommended.

Had been as a couple on a previous Saturday eve and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves so decided to take my mum who is a real food critic!!! She loved it ate and cleared her plate on 3 courses not normally heard of. Wine we chose excellent and great value for money. Service very good the guy remembered us from our previous visit and went that extra mile to make everything enjoyable. Deffo be returning for more lovely freshly prepared food. Yes you do have to wait for your food but this is pointed out on the menu due to it being so fresh and in my opinion worth the wait and another glass of wine.

Bought a certificate for dining, since we planned to be in Chester overnight. The restaurant was near our hotel, and easy to find. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. A glass of wine was included. We had 2 courses, starter and main, and each lived up to expectations. Only disappointment was that we had to eat in the bar, when the empty dining room was right beside.

Six of us went to The Gunnery for a meal on Saturday 8th March, although we had been for just drinks before, we hadn't had a meal there yet so decided to try it for a birthday celebration.
We were seated quickly in the upstairs dining area and the atmosphere was good, with live music on downstairs.

However, from there the service - although friendly - became quite slow overall.
The first drinks order seemed to take a while to arrive and from ordering the food (just a main course and desserts), the first course took over an hour and 15 minutes to arrive and subsequent drinks orders also seemed to have been forgotten. The restaurant must have acknowledged that the food was taking a while as they gave us complimentary bread and olives.

Although the meals were good, non of us were sure if they were worth the hour plus wait.

With the service of desserts, us having arrived at just after 8.15pm, with our taxi booked for 11.45 when we just managed to finish our meal and pay; overall, our meal alone took over 3 hours and this gave us no real time to have a drink afterwards to enjoy the atmosphere in the bar downstairs.

On top of that we were charged for extras we didn't have (although these were removed when we pointed this out) and when asked if we enjoyed our meals, we did advise that the service was generally quite slow, but our waitress just kind of looked at us with a quiet 'sorry'.

Perhaps a little bit more attention can be paid to diners in the first floor area so that they can also relax and spend more money downstairs after their meal? Just a thought.

This experience won't sop me going back to The Gunnery, but not sure we'd add a meal to the experience next time if having to wait so long to eat is the norm here.

(My rating would have been much higher, but the slow service for me was quite frustrating)

Went there on a Thursday....big signs saying "thirsty Thursdays" £2.50 for a glass of wine...
I go to bar ask for two medium house red wines....that will be £9.00 please....How does that work then.....!!!! Not impressed and it seems to me a bit of a scam to get you in? no advice was offered by the staff? menu very limited...nibbles do not show on the menu for some reason!!!
the place also needs a carpet as it has an echo feel to the place and you can hear everyone talking!!! also there needs to be a specific ' bar area" as it makes you feel a little uncomfortable just having a drink!!!
in summary....
offers need to be explained properly
menu needs a revamp
carpet to be fitted
bar area needs sorting

otherwise a lovely little place...
