“Just as good as last time!”
Reviewed February 3, 2014

New to the area, we first visited The Gunnery in Autumn of last year on a Travelzoo deal. We are regular 'eater-outers', usually heading towards Chester, but fancied a change for our Anniversary last weekend. We'd had a good meal last time, so thought we'd give it another go. Weren't we pleased we did! We booked via 'top-table' but then realised that there was 'an act' on, so phoned to say that we would like to have a more private, intimate table, to be told by the psychic person that answered that they had already done that. Great atmosphere of what seemed to be locals, when we arrived, which boded well. We were shown thro to the downstairs dining room, where a large party was already seated. Sadly there was a mix up about bookings for said large party, (no fault of the restaurant) which meant that they unexpectedly had TWO large parties. This situation was handled seamlessly by Sarah and the other young, but excellent waiting on team, and everyone was soon accommodated happily. It in no way affected the efficiency of service we received or intimate ambience of the place. A superb meal ensued (seasonal and locally sourced), served attentively and discretely. I can personally testify to the quality and potency of the wine, although possibly somewhat pricey for some pockets. After our lovely meal we retired to the bar area and spent the next hour or so being thoroughly entertained by a brilliant, young male singer. The atmosphere was one of the best we have encountered anywhere in Chester. I always read the bad reviews on TA and can honestly say that I can't believe some of the people writing them visited the same brasserie that we did, they are totally unfounded. In our opinion it is well worth a 'repeat performance'...the sooner the better! In my husbands words: it was fab!
One slight criticism (sorry, I feel duty bound to make just one!) Where are the fab photos of your excellent brasserie on your website? I know upstairs is a work in progress, but one meagre picture of a wall with pictures? What about the exquisite bar? The intimate dining room? You must do better! ;-) And it would be nice to be able to join your mailing list via the website too!

“Good local brasserie”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

Has lunch with friends and really enjoyed the food and wine. The service was attentive and helpful changing several ingredients in the menu when asked. Good ambiance too. Mushroom risotto was delicious. I had hake as fish and chips which was very nice with good chips.

“Perfect place, great New Year's Eve!!”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

Went here New Year's Eve, we booked a table last minute luckily there was a table left. The food was amazing so much flavour. Even tho the portions didn't seem very big, it was plenty. There was great live music on through the night. Staff were excellent, food was served quickly. Really enjoyed the time we spent at the gunnery. Can't wait to return there soon.

“A little disappointed!”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

I booked well in advance for my 50th wedding anniversary in early December 2013. I was asked as we were a large party of 14 to have our menus in a week before in order to avoid having to wait. This was done as requested. We were disappointed to find we had at least an hours wait before our first course. Some of the party were disappointed with the food, however all fish courses were excellent. Two people who had ordered the same desert in advance were told they were not available. Drinks were extremely slow coming and we had to open our own wine which had also been ordered in advance. I felt that the people who were sat in the restaurant below were receiving the most attention from the staff. I feel the management were at fault.
