“Almost overlooked, but worth wandering up to the front door to check it out!”
Reviewed March 19, 2013 via mobile

We were looking for a nice cafe with good quality coffee and home-made cakes which was dog-friendly. Initially we thought it was closed although there was a coffee sign at the entrance, fortunately two ladies came up the driveway and realised we were unsure, they reassured us it was a dog-friendly cafe which they had visited the day before. They were going back for lunch so we took this as a recommendation!glad we did as the welcome was warm and they delivered the quality of product we were looking for. We hadn't realised it was a veggie venue, menu looked good and had it not been for the "cash only" sign we Might have chosen to lunch instead. There are a LOT of cafes in Lulworth and we nearly passed this place by, it really needs a welcoming board at the entrance to the driveway indicating coffee and cakes within! Even better would be a dog-friendly sign too. Worth a visit!

“Engaged!”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

My Fiance proposed to me in Lulworth in December, the owners of Bishops Cottage were amazingly caring and provided us with the best care. I could not have had a more wonderful time. Its a beautifully decorated home from home, a wonderfully warm welcome, a truly very friendly village in general (seems the whole village knew before I did of my engagement!!!)
Thanks for everything guys - we will definitely come back to visit to use the pool in warmer times!!

“Deliciously home cooked, local food - with a great view and welcoming surroundings!”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

Following what was quite a bitterly cold and wet day (the January freeze no less!), the group which I was in, were in dire need of good warm, quality home cooked food. Looking no further than the Bishop’s Cottage (restaurant, not the B&B – more on this below) – we descended upon the establishment to be greeted with a warm glow from the open door – the fires had been stoked, wine at the ready and inviting sofas ready to receive the ravenous rabble.

The policy of the restaurant is a relaxed one – treat the place as your own and more importantly – feel free to BOYB (bring your own beer/alcohol).

After a few glasses of chilled wine, we were led to the restaurant, again complete with roaring fire and warm leather sofas, a chess table for the intellectuals (none in our group!) and a warm welcome from the chef.

Now to the important bit – the food (the reason why you are reading this). It was nothing short than jaw-droppingly delicious. In the main, the group were treated to local caught, fresh and succulent sea food: Scallops wrapped in Pancetta, juicy pan-seared Prawns – the starter alone was a delight.

Mains were no different – again, the seafood was truly impressive – sea bass on a bed of sautéed potatoes (cooked perfectly!) or the alternative was a delicately cooked Duck breast, again with sautéed potatoes on a bed of wilted spinach.

For dessert (if the above wasn’t enough), we were treated to the most intense and enjoyable trio of chocolate desserts I have ever had – a perfectly baked soft chocolate tart, homemade steamed chocolate pudding (with the soft centre!) and ice cream to soften the warmth of the molten brown textures.

After clearing most of our plates (and a round of charades in between it must be said – they are very accommodating as previously mentioned!), we finished with the cheese board: locally made cheeses were on offer – and although I struggled to eat much more – I managed to savour the Cornish Yarg, Dorset Blue Vinney and some Brie over a glass of port.

As it was historically the quiet period (not many people venture into Dorset on what was one of the most wettest and coldest weekends to start 2013), we were allowed use of the B&B facilities above the restaurant which were more accommodating than the alternative, given this January has been unseasonably cold. Although not related to the restaurant review, it’s worth noting that the investment of one of the oldest buildings of W.Lulworth (if not THE oldest) was truly staggering – all bedrooms had been modernised to the standard expected of 5*hotel rooms – inviting large double beds, modern tiled bathrooms and comfy looking leather sofas – all complete with a sea view.

Back to the review at hand however – after finishing our meal, we retired to the open fire place for some more wine – inviting the chef and owner to a quite frankly well deserved drink with the group: we were treated to some local and colourful history of the establishment, dating back several hundred years.

Retiring in the dying hours of the day, the group left with nothing but praise and adoration for the restaurant, which humbly sports one of the most value for money meals that we have ever experienced (as it was a special event for the occasion I am unsure whether the offer was standard – but we had the above 3 courses plus cheeseboard for around £30 pp). All who ventured to this fine establishment commented we would return and I would urge anyone reading this, to wander over for some especially fine dining in this lovely sea side village.

“Relaxing weekend!”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

Thank you for such a fantastic weekend! My sister, mother and I stayed for a couple of nights and had a lovely weekend. We were made most welcome and with 2 vegetarians the kitchen could not have been more accommodating.

The food was amazing! We were even allowed to take our breakfast up and have it in our bedroom which was a real treat!

When you pay to go away somewhere you expect to get a good service back, At Bishop's Cottage they go out of their way to ensure you do.
We will be going back again!

“Why stop anywhere else?”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

We met up with some friends and stopped here for two nights quite by chance having been let down by another hotel nearby. What a lucky chance! Fantastic contemporary styled rooms with comfortable beds and great amenities (never mind the views!). Breakfast has to be the best ever and the owner and staff most friendly and willing to assist in anyway they could.
The downside? Rosie's Cider should not be served in anything larger than an egg cup and should carry a government health warning. Would we stay again? You bet!
