Catch them on a good day – preferably when the sun is shining and you can enjoy the patio or garden – and you’ll probably enjoy this visit to a proper thatched pub (of which there is something of a dearth in the New Forest). Shame that the "Specials" are incorporated in the standard menu and written in perma-chalk on the blackboards, and tend toward pretentious rather than special (and avoid the unfortunately named Floater Coffee). The sandwiches on the bar food menu were fine, but the burger lacked cheese, and the cheese platter was inadequate (I guess somewhat à la Monty Python "Cheese Shop" sketch, cheese was off). And for some reason the bill always seems to come out to be more than we anticipate, yet we return because of the convenient and fairly picturesque location.
