“The Three Tuns used to be our favourite :-(”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

The Three Tuns used to be our favourite destination food pub in the area (see previous review, Nov 2011). Our experience on Sunday evening changed that:-
We've eaten in the restaurant and introduced friends on a number of occasions to the (previously) creative and changing menu. We've been coming here for around 3 years. Previously, there used to be a two/three course option where new and innovative dishes were trialled at a keen price -and were generally great value. That changed a couple of years ago and the menu seems to have stopped 'progressing' as a result.
However, our main gripe centres around the very basic roast beef dinner we were served on Sunday evening.
As a 'destination pub', I think it's fair to expect a quality Sunday roast -even if it's served in the evening..after all, you are still paying £12 (£11.95!) for a single course!
Our roast beef dishes consisted of:
-Grey, thinly machine-sliced rib of beef -some of which had dried out completely since it was presumably sliced in preparation for lunch time service? (Akin to frozen ready meal roast beef!)
-Three roast potatoes which also tasted as though they'd also been kicking around since lunch (you know that old school dinner flavour!)
-Yorkshire puddings -one of which was burnt...How did that get beyond the 'pass'?
-Basic vegetables (carrots, cauliflower, green beans and mange tout) which, to be fair, were freshly cooked and were the highlight of the meal! But where were the interesting veg eg beetroot puree and so on that used to be signatures of The Three Tuns?
I'm kind of sensing that this place has lost its creativity and spark and is resting on its laurels? As a destination pub, The Three Tuns cannot afford to get into such a rut -and the novelty dishes which have been on the menu now for a long time will not be enough to keep the place afloat for ever in these money-tight times!
Our experience on Sunday evening was enough to make us re-evaluate what we previously considered to be a great place :-(

“Food only ok, but quite pricey.”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

We ate here before, and it was very good. However, today's Mothering Sunday meal was a disappointment. Food was ok, but a bit bland. One saucer of veg between four of us was stingy to say the least. Yorkies overdone. Gravy tasted like Bisto. That said, I've had much worse Sunday dinners out, but at this price, and from a previously good bet, it was frustrating. Also had the crammed in feel of a successful restaurant milking it. Could have had better food and better atmosphere for less money elsewhere.

“Go for the Egg 'n' Soldiers...!”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

Four of us enjoyed a very pleasant lunch here last weekend. The food was excellent tempered only by the service being a little slow to begin with. Plenty of specials to choose from, although they weren't pointed out to us. The Forty-Niner bitter was excellent, and the wine list was varied and not too expensive. As a dessert, the Egg 'n' Soldiers was superbly presented and so good that I was asked to take a photograph of it!! Overall, a good experience, and we will return when next in Bransgore.
