“superlatives are not enough: it is a miracle!”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

to describe the pretzhof experience.
we have been there for the first time and wanted to take a quick look for a future visit
at lunchtime, twelve noon on a very wintry day. there was snow on the brenner pass
and the winding road to the pretzhof was also seeing a sprinkling of fresh powdery white.
the sign for the place is totally unobtrusive and doesn't rise any expectation.
but the moment you enter the place, it all changes:
cosy and elegant, superior quality where ever you look.
you get a seat in one of several alpcottage like rooms, get asked if you like to have
a drink and something to bite. then comes the padrone: karl and asks you if you
would like some homemade antipasti before explaining what the kitchen has to offer
this day. no menu, no prices, nothing of this profanity.
- we were totally entranced and followed his lead. the bread was tasted with a selection
of the best olive oils i have had... the consomme was outstanding, the maincourse:
fresh lamb-liver the best I ever had and the apfelstrudel was poetry.
the wine was recommended and by the glass: two whites, one red, both from northern italy.
we still had no idea what it would cost us, but we were already committed in buying the olive
oil in the attached shop:
the three course menu plus additional antipasti and 'greetings' from the kitchen
plus wine was costing less than euro 70.-,and i bet that anywhere else it would have
been more than double with lesser quality.
the shop was crowning our experience as we could buy the wine we tasted with the menu
and the olive oil as well: when we came home we compared the prices with those on the internet and again: the shop was considerably less expensive than we could have purchased
anywhere else.
- how is this possible? atmosphere, surroundings, service and quality of food was absolutely
outstanding and still this inexpensive? it is a miracle and anybody who wants to find out
if miracles are possible, should go there!

“Better than counting stars”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

After visiting 3 stars restaurants, you should take a break and go where you can get natural food with wonderful taste and real cooking. We just follow the advices of the owner, most of you (readers) are afraid to do so. It is one of the very very few place in the world of cooking where you can have such confidence : we end up with one of the best meal in our long life and check twice the bill as it was incredibly reasonable (better than a fair price). The location is spectacular, the farm is so beautiful, the atmosphere is so nice and warm, the food is so far above what you can have in a city. Years ago, we saw some kind of documentary about this place and we dream about it; we were going from Trento to Innsbruck and make a reservation: so now we have to go back : it is worth a trip, it is extra - ordinary !!!

“Locavore and eco-conscious - and DELICIOUS - Long Review”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

After a misunderstanding via e-mails, four of us arrived without reservations in late December. We were surprised how remote the location was (up a narrow, winding road), and even more surprised to find the parking lot full. The restaurant was very rustic and cozy, and we were very disappointed to be informed that there were no tables available. After presenting a print-out of the e-mails I had exchanged with an employee, the owner greeted us and asked if we would be patient, enjoy an aperitif and browse in the little store, and he would accommodate us as soon as another party left.
From that point on, the owner was extremely friendly and went out of his way to make us welcome. Our experience was very unlike an earlier reviewer who thought the staff were "snooty". The menu is limited based on what "Mama" is cooking that day.
We were first presented with a beautiful anti-pasti platter consisting of all products produced from their own farm animals - carpaccio, roast beef, smoked venison, their "famous" home-made speck (a kind of bacon), and smoked sausage - along with a plate with four kinds of cheeses - and a big basket of breads. Herr Mair explained in English exactly what each item was. Having products with no chemicals or hormones is their passion. The restaurant has been open 33-years, and between the farm and the restaurant, he said they work 18-hours a day. Four family members work in the business with 16 additional staff. Next came a rich gulash soup made from "mountain cows" and a platter of home-made raviolis with cheese. By then we could hardly eat more, and requested SMALL portions of the main courses - which included spanferkel (suckling pig), lamb chops, "mountain cow" and, chicken. The chicken was the only item not produced on the farm, and it came from the farm of nearby friends. Everything was fresh and delicious.
It was getting late (and dark), and we had an hour more to drive, so we opted not to have dessert. We were invited to go into their kitchen to have a look and to meet "Mama" (Frau Meir). There we found her busily hand-making knoedel of some sort.
We all agreed it was a unique and enjoyable experience. We hope we will be back in the area someday, and would definitely make reservations and visit again. Highly recommended for anyone visiting this area of the Dolomites - near Sterzing and Bolzano.
