Description: Set in the charming historic town of Bampton, an area well known for its hunting, fishing, shooting and hugely popular with ramblers and cyclists alike. The magnificent Exmoor National Park is just six miles away and the beautiful beaches of North and South Devon are only a 40 minute drive. The Swan, being the oldest pub in Bampton, was originally lodgings to accommodate the masons and other craftsmen who were hired to enlarge the church in 1450. St Michaels church can be seen from the terrace just behind the pub. The pub has recently been renovated to a high standard with a solid oak bar giving it a contemporary yet traditional feel. The Swan has kept the original fireplace and bread oven dating back to 1450. With Steve overseeing the front of house, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, serving traditional pub food, fine wines and real ales all at affordable prices. On Sundays you can order a roast of locally produced meat from the Hill's farm or if you don't fancy that you can choose something from the Sunday lunch menu. We have well-kept real ale on the hand pumps with guest ales and a keen selection of wines from around the world to suit all tastes. Paul and Donna look forward to welcoming you to The Swan...

To begin with, this pub has a wonderful atmosphere - a real glowing, cosy pub that's perfect for a chilly evening. There were 4 of us and the service was also fantastic without being overbearing - the waitresses were very attentive and a gentleman who I assume is the manager came over a few times to check on us.
The food was fantastic, I had the duck, pork and black pudding scotch egg which was perfectly cooked and delicious, my boyfriend had the whitebait which I stole most of as the portion was huge and our friends had the fishcake and pigs cheek which they really enjoyed.
I had the monkfish in pancetta for main which was perfectly cooked as was the rest of this dish, and the others had the sausages and burgers which were all thoroughly enjoyed. The vegetable portions were quite small but there were lots of chunky chips which were gorgeous!
The desserts were also fabulous, the cheesecake just melted in your mouth and the sticky toffee pudding also went down very well.
Looking forward to returning, just a shame it's so far away from Tiverton!

“A Must”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

My Husband and I had a meal at the Swan, booking is recommended although we arrived early and took a chance and were lucky enough to get a table.
The food is fantastic.
My husband had the Tremlett farm pork belly, hogs pudding and cider jus which he said was absolutely delicious. I had the stuffed chicken breast which was amazing. For pudding he had White chocolate and honeycomb cheesecake with homemade peanut butter ice cream and I had English blueberry, raspberry ,vodka and vanilla pannacotta trifle, again these were delicious.
If you are in Bampton you must visit this pub and have a meal, the pub is small so booking is highly recommended as it gets pretty busy or take a chance and maybe you'll be lucky enough to get a table. You will not regret it.

“re catering for "diabetics"”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2013

unfortunately the 2 negative reviews re food etc are totally out of order.
I have eaten and frequented the Swan, many, many times .
I have witnessed the chefs going "out of there way to fulfill dietry needs of customers..., they both regularly visit tables,"chat"with there customers, and respond/react to there needs.
The food is, as always, exceptional in its quality and diversity, hence the need to book in advance",
The waiting staff and bar staff are exemplory in there approach to customer service, and the quality of food is exceptional!!
yes! there isnt a "childrens" menu! but as can be seen on many a celebrity tv programme they harp on about "good, healthy food". thats what they get here "Paul and Donna" dont do kids "junk" food, they do smaller portions off the menu for children!!.
As for there being "no" desert for diabetics!!!!!!!!!!. I find it hard to believe, as "paul"himself being "diabetic",is probably more aware than most chefs as too there requirements and this can be backed up by there menus
.All I can say to this negative review is maybe it is trying to "slur" (for whatever reason), the excellent reputation of the swan, along with both Paul and Donna and its many, many happy customers.
I, and many other people will still frequent the Swan and Enjoy "fantastic food" cooked by "fantastic" people and advise anybody travelling through Bampton, to visit and enjoy its great hospitality and outstaning food.
