“Two sleepless nights”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

We were in the area for an anniversary and had booked before the ownership changed. When we arrived the owner pretended not to have the booking, and the place was full of over-loud music. The room was superficially fine but on closer examination needed a good clean, dust under the bed and had to clean the TV in order to see the screen. The owner seemed taken aback that we asked for a set of towels each as only one had been provided! He also was reluctant to provide more than 3 tea bags.

The breakfast was the worst we have ever tasted, disgusting cheap sausages, pre-cooked hard, leathery fried eggs and even the brown sauce was revolting.

After a day out we returned to find the room had not been serviced.

The bed was very uncomfortable, the pillows lumpy and the bed linen crumpled.

I understand the previous owners are at the swan - go there instead!

Room Tip: Go elsewhere!

Came with friends as I was being treated to lunch. Lovely place, nice staff, but food needs attention. Avocado with prawns and crayfish mousse was nothing of the sort. Dry avocado, no dressing on (frozen) fish, no dressing at all on garnish, very bland. Obviously microwaved veg with main course, very spongy new potatoes and not enough vegetables. If this wasn't being given to me as a treat I would have sent it back. Hope the food returns to its former glory, it's a nice place!

Have had many delicious and happy meals here in a Devon pub full of atmosphere, dogs - a place where the locals rub shoulders with the squires, and the shooting party ends up after a hard days beating. I was slightly surprised to get a table for 3 on a Saturday night, but thought we had struck gold. Then as we walked up from the river in Bampton the charm and peace of the was village was interrupted by the music 'blaring' over a table of happy revellers outside the pub for an instant I thought they had brought their own ghetto blaster then on reflection I thought it was Saturday night and maybe they had live music.

One foot in the door and instantly you new there had been a change of ownership, it is difficult to say why, not much had changed yet everything had changed, the staff were friendly and attentive enough but gone was the oxygen of life. The food well it was certainly cooked to order, with so few eating you did wonder why it took so long, the tuna was cooked well enough, my shortcrust pie (beef though the menu doesn't tell you) was stuffed full of beef but lacked that Devon charm the veg, well as others have said were insipid, the red cabbage was just that boiled red cabbage. There is a magic to be had in some pubs unfortunately here it left with the last owners. Would love to know where they have moved to!?

My wife and I went here on a recommendation--which turned out to be out of date as it is now under new management.
We ordered whole trout and beef. The beef was delicious, but came with a different sauce. The seasonal veg were insipid and over cooked. The potatoes were swimming in grease, overcooked and tasteless.
However the trout capped it...it looked absolutely beautiful, but it was nowhere near cooked the 1st time. The 2nd time it was still completely undercooked and we had to call a halt and leave.
I didn't pay for the uneaten trout, there was no goodwill rebate.
Still hungry and needing food, so went down the road to the (excellent) fish and chip shop in Bampton.

Since the new owners have taken over the Sunday carvery (previously fantastic) has deteriorated, as demonstrated by the lack of customers when we were there. Grease-laden roast potatoes, appalling rubbery Yorkshire puddings, indifferent vegetables, and none of it really hot.
Such a shame, as this used to be such an excellent carvery.
The puddings are fine, and I can't speak for the evening menu, but we won't be returning.

Highly recommend the Quarryman's Rest. Visited the pub while staying nearby on holiday. We were overwhelmed by the warm welcome. Staff were very friendly and made us feel at home. We had a wonderful meal. The food was of exceptionally high standard and we were spoilt for menu choice. The children received generous portions of food. Zaira our Irish Setter loved attention from the staff and enjoyed plenty of treats! Best pub I have ever visited for food, service and warm welcome.

We ate here 2 nights while we had a short break in Bampton. New management had taken over only 4 days ago but you wouldn't have guessed.
Very friendly staff, lovely food (Forest Fruits Eton Mess is a must!) and Alfie the spaniel loved his biscuits supplied each night.
Thoroughly recommend this pub!
