Being from the states, I looked forward to staying in an english B & B. We were not disappointed at all. This is a wonderful home to stay in. Fiona was so kind and the room had all the comforts: nice bath, heated bed, free wifi. The breakfast was very delicious and served in a lovely old dining room: fresh bakery loaf every morning, warmed fruit, nice local muesli as well as hot English breakfast. We headed out the door every morning to spend our days exploring the Exmoor coastal walks. Tip: park in the carpark across the street.

we were sceptical when we saw the bad reviews. but can assure you that fiona has read them and(if they were true) rectified the issues. absolutely amazing service, atmosphere is wonderful. I felt like I was sleeping at my nannies house, lovely! the food is to die for, we had braised wild boar and chocolate mousse to follow. I am a chef and can honestly say I woudnt have done it better! go and see for yourself.you won't be disappointed

We stayed as a couple at Heron House in November 2012 and had a lovely weekend. The owner was very helpful with directions and general booking process. Our room was lovely - very comfy bed, nicely laid tray of tea and coffee (though would have liked a decaf option), tv in room, hairdryer, en suite bathroom was lovely. Breakfast was a sumptuous treat. Would definitely recommend.

Firstly we must point out that we have not stayed so cannot comment on the quality of accommodation or food.
We made our booking through money supermarket at a good price. We called in advance to check than an en suite room was available as we definitely did not want the room with the attached bathroom. Confirmation was given over the phone and by e mail that this room was available so we proceeded to buy our voucher. We received a confirmation e mail from the B&B confirming our booking. The final sentence to the e mail was " I expect you would like supper at heron house on the night of your arrival". This was not part of the deal and quite frankly we felt this was rather presumptuous. We were not sure of our plans so said we would confirm in a few days. Within a few hours we received a second e mail stating that the owner had made a mistake and the en suite room was not available after all. At this stage we had ordered and fully paid for our voucher.
We are unable to say if there was a connection between our uncertainty over a dinner booking and the cancellation of our room. However, after checking two large hotel booking sites the en suite room seemed available for our requested dates.
It will now take us 14 working days to receive a refund for our voucher so not only are we out of pocket for a fortnight we now have to make alternative accommodation arrangements
Disappointed by the level of service!

This is Bed and Breakfast with a difference! If you like Egyptian Cotton Bedding, Stunning Rooms, every possible comfort catered for (including yummy chocolate biscuits stash in each room), breakfasts only dreamed of and optional evening meal cooked (we believe) by someone trained in Cordon Bleu... this is the place to be. Should be called a Hotel surely (we've been constantly disappointed by Hotels we have paid through the nose for and needn't have suffered them had we known something like this was in existence). Run by a very classy 'Little Miss Dynamite' - we say thank you and we will be back...

Room Tip: had the Four Poster room with en suite bathroom. Friends took the back room with separate bathroom...

LOCATION:
We stayed in Bampton on a visit to Exmoor Pony Center & chose to stay here rather than closer to the center in case the weather was bad...thinking we could more easily get in & out here than up near Exmoor. This was about a 40 minute drive from the Pony Center & location-wise for our purposes was a good one...though in warmer weather we would stay in the town near the Pony Center instead. From reading other reviews, it looks like this is an ideal location for basing a stay for shooting sports.

ROOM:
Our room & bath were very clean & had modern ameneties with still an English country appeal that made it feel quite cozy & guest-house like. The room was small, but Fiona was kind enough to accommodate all 3 of us with a floor mattress to sleep a third. There is no sitting area in the room, but Fiona has a lovely large sitting area downstairs that you are welcome to. We enjoyed looking at her many pictures of family & English history & landscapes that were hanging about & she has a nice selection of magazines laid out to serve a variety of natural interests. Our room was very cold, but we didn't think to ask about it & in the morning when we drew the curtains, we realized the inside window was open & the outside window had a few inch gap between the top & the building, so we basically slept with the window open all night...no wonder it was cold! (but the beds were warm, so it was good) I just suggest checking the window if you find the room cold!

Linens were clean & fresh & not worn at all. Towels were fluffy & soft & the toiletries were of a high quality & not just the cheapest you could find up at the local shop...so it gives a high level of quality to your stay all around, which can not be found at larger guest houses or at many hotels.

BREAKFAST:
The reviews from others are to be believed. Fiona serves a wonderful breakfast & very obviously takes pride in this. From the bakery fresh bread and local home-made greek yogurt to her yummy warm winter fruit compote & freshly made preserve/jam selection, breakfast is a super English treat here! Eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, beans to your liking. High quality Dorset cereals. Very very nice breakfast that is well-rounded with fruits, high quality cereals, fresh cooked items, and homemade jams & bakery fresh bread...one of the best Guest House breakfasts we've ever experienced. (and we've experienced quite a few!) Please note, though, that breakfast is served at a large table with guests dining together as opposed to several small tables with each room dining at its own table. We enjoyed this aspect & socializing with the other guests, but this may not be to all tastes & is rather different from our other experiences in UK Guest Houses.

If you are concerned about the presence of dogs (which we were not, we were looking forward to it!) don't be...you don't see them unless you want to & you very rarely hear them. They are sweet & well behaved, although maybe a little excited at having visitors if they get to meet you...which we loved!

I'd say that the only piece of our stay that might have been disconcerting to some (but not to us as we were on no particular time schedule) was a slight lack of punctuality upon arrival in the evening & breakfast in the morning. But Fiona is very accomodating & I'm quite certain that if you communicated any time constraints to her she would be very glad to oblige.

We very much enjoyed our stay here & are hoping to find a similar winter fruit recipe online so we can remember it at least in the culinary aspect!

Thank you again Fiona!

Room Tip: If your room is cold, make sure that both windows are closed! : )
