Just spent a fabulous few days at Gardens of Irini. The first night I enjoyed a great evening meal, really good cooking. The next day the breakfast didn't fall below the high standard of the evening before.

Deirdre had organised a pick up from the airport for me and a rental car for the days I was in Bellapais, everything went like clockwork.

If you're looking for a quiet place, with the option to cook for yourself if you so wish, in a village setting with the panorama of the hills and the sea in the distance this is the place for you. It's not a package or boutique hotel, that's what gives it charm.

Yes, there are cats and dogs but they are not intrusive.

Whilst visiting Bellapais Abbey on our holiday last September we climb the hill to visit the home of Lawrence Durrell (Bitter Lemons).Climbing a little higher beyond the house we stumbled on the Gardens of Irini owned by Deirdre Guthrie. We enjoyed some of her delightful home cooking and were fascinated by the tale of her life as a professional Flamenco Dancer. She knew Lawrence Durrell as a family friend and has a wonderful collection of artifacts and photographs from her world tours and famous family. Not to be missed!

Room Tip: Sorry did not stay here just ate lunch

We arrived late and exhausted, the result of an emergency landing in Greece on the way and immediately felt cared for. Deirdre had sorted out the taxi which had to make two trips to Larnaca to pick us up, reordered our jeep and generally made us feel at home. And what a home, for two weary travellers, we couldn't have felt better cared for.
Gardens of Irini is really beautiful. Shady, surrounded by beautiful plants and classical music playing and of course Deirdre who is a wonderful, attentive host.
We stayed in the Studio which is quiet and shady. There are fans everywhere so that we could always escape the heat and there is a little fountain playing the the 'back' garden.
Deirdre's food is legendary and deserves to be so. The prices are reasonable and the quality outstanding. We loved staying there, it was a haven of peace and tranquility, just what we needed but with lots of interesting visitors too, many of whom had good travellers tales to tell.
Deirdre herself was a great host with many fascinating tales to tell. We travel a lot but this one will stay firmly at the top of our happiness rating.
Yes, there are cats who are also amusing and characterful and who make the stay more interesting and certainly do not affect the cleanliness of the property in any way.

Room Tip: Both rooms are lovely and different

We first visited "Dierdre's" 10 plus years ago on our first visit to N Cyprus and had an excellent meal in good company. It was so good that when we returned to N Cyprus we sought it out again and were delighted to find it was still there. This will not be to everone's taste but if you like something a bit different and excellent food (and don't mind cats) then we can recommend a visit. The whole evening is wonderful, from the welcome drinks, home cooked food under the vines followed by liqueurs in an oustanding location. Dierdre can arrange for a taxi to take you right to the door of her house which was quite an experience in its self as it is at the top of Bellapais village along paths that are not built for cars.
I have read some of the bad reviews and assume they have been written by "package holiday makers" who cannot enjoy anything that is a bit out of the ordinary or do not like cats. For travellers who enjoy different and enriching experiences We urge you to visit

My husband and I have just returned from a week's holiday in Lapta, near Kyrenia. We were staying at another hotel but tracked down Ms. Guthrie's place via the 'Lonely Planet'. What a find! A real oasis and an opportunity to get out of the scorching heat to sit and enjoy Deirdre's home made lemonade. We asked about eating there and she offered to cook for us that night. We sat in her garden for a while that afternoon, along with some other 'traveller's' and shared the experiences we had all had. It was here we found about releasing turtle's into the wild, which we did later in the week. When we returned that evening for dinner, lovely aroma's were drifting from Dierdre's kitchen and we eventually sat down to eat her meal which it turned out she had cooked just for the two of us !! We enjoyed a 3 course meal, the highlight of which was a very generous helping of home-made, 4 hrs in the oven, kleftiko and it was delicious! Years have been spent in perfecting this recipe I think. Dierdre is kind to animals and sadly you won't find that very often in North Cyprus. She won't see a cat go hungry - We suggest you go with an open mind and an open heart and you will love it. You might encounter a couple of FRIENDLY cats and dogs sitting around which we thought was lovely. Believe me, I don't want to sit in cat hairs etc. (I'm also allergic) but this wasn't a problem I could see. We continued to sit in the garden after dinner with a lovely couple who were staying in one of the self catering rooms and chatted away like old friends. We didn't stay in the rooms but we were invited to look in, they looked cozy and well equipped but that's all I can say about them because we only went for a meal. Big hotels are restrictive with their do's and dont's but this just doesn't apply here, this is something else. We would love to return to 'Gardens of Irini' and would recommend particularly to a solo traveller or couple looking for a unique experience.
