“Stunning views - sombre monument”

Sherwood Foresters Regiment Memorial
Reviewed August 12, 2014

A 'must visit' spot offering views of many counties on a good weather day. Very sobering to read the names of all the fallen, particularly those from the sad Blair-induced wars of recent times. A fitting memorial for truly brave men and for one of the great Regiments.

I live a few miles from Crich Stand and can see it from my house. This memorial to soldiers of the Sherwood Foresters and the regiments that have replaced them is set in a stunning location above the village of Crich. If you are lucky to be there on a sunny day then the views are spectacular, but even on a grey windy Derbyshire day this is a special place with a peaceful feel.My Uncle served with the Foresters in WWII in North Africa and was killed in Tunisia so this place has a special meaning to me,I often came here as a boy and today brought my Grandson to see it and remember all the fallen from the First World War. Pay a visit if you are visiting the area it is well worth it.

I feel I must correct the title for this Memorial.

The Memorial is that of the SHERWOOD FORESTERS, dedicated to the 11,409 Foresters from WW1 and 1520 Foresters from WW2 who made the supreme sacrifice, The WORCESTERSHIRE & SHERWOOD FORESTERS (WFR), and further dedicated to the fallen of the MERCIAN REGIMENT, of which WFR form the second battalion.

This may seem a trivial thing to persons not involved with the military but, it means so much to those who have served, especially Sherwood Foresters!

The Memorial is well worth a visit as the views are really good, especially on a clear day. Please note however that in inclement weather, for safety reasons, the Tower might be closed.

There is an additional memorial to those members of the Foresters, WFR and Mercian Regiment who have fallen since 1945, with their names being inscribed on the memorial. Unfortunately, this memorial had to be extended!

At the entrance near the Cottage there is an "honesty" box for the small entrance fee, the same applies to the Tower.

Well worth a visit.

this memorial whilst primarily a war memorial is a great place to visit. £2 in the honesty box and you can have a look at the memorial then climb up the actual tower. the views on a clear day are awesome. radcliffe on trent power station and beyond to the east and to the north you look out over rolling derbyshire hills to alfreton and even as far as the wind turbines over near the m1 where it meets the m18.we went 3 days ago on the sunday and took our dog ,she enjoyed the walk and i like to think the views too! great fun even on a cool day. crich tramway museum lies directly under the memorial so you can drop into that as well while you are in the vicinity.

We were visiting friends in Bakewell and Matlock area and made a small detour to check out this viewpoint on the map. What a pleasant surprise, the view of the countryside was fantastic. The staff tending the ground are very nice and we bought some refreshment from the little cafe. There is no obvious parking lots other than for the disable so please park carefully on the nicely maintained grounds. There is a token charge for vehicle entry which goes towards charity.
