Álafoss wool factory is not only a great store to visit for anyone who loves knitting or felting, you also get a great variety of woolen clothes and gifts. A must for anyone who loves to work with wool, or who is in search of an Icelandic sweater. The store has a selection of products created bz Icelandic designers who work with wool or glass.

“A Knitter's Paradise”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

I've been to Iceland twice now, and a visit there wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Álafoss factory store. I've come home each time with a large duffel bag full of Icelandic wool, and my mother, a non-knitter, also found a nice handknit lopi sweater for herself there. The price of the wool is far lower than it would be if you were to purchase the yarn outside of Iceland, and you have the bonus of a land of immeasurable beauty to explore. There are also a few other stores to explore and a small café on site alongside a small river. I can't recommend it enough.

“Icelandic sweaters, yarn, gifts, and great service!”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

I'm a weaver and knitter. Anyone who engages in these pursuits knows that visiting fiber locations overseas is a passion. Alafoss had been on my bucket list for more than 20 years. I finally got to Iceland in December, 2012, and the first destination was to Alafoss - by public bus (15 minutes). The bus driver was so helpful in assisting me to find the location. A walking path starts at the road and it's a short walk, even in the cold air.

Alafoss is in an old mill along the river. The building itself (and surrounding buildings) are original and reflect an old tradition; they are charming. Opening the door to the store was food for the fiber soul. The store is large and has extensive displays of Icelandic sweaters, Alafoss (Lopi) yarn of all types, Icelandic gifts, and a small 'cafe' area. Prices of sweaters are the best you'll find in Iceland and the staff is sooooooo knowledgeable about how they are made, from shearing the sheep to finished product. Yarn prices are quite low, well below what is charged overseas - and no tax.

Most endearing was the staff! Karen and others really know their products and are so patient with guests. They really help people who want genuine Icelandic sweaters and products. My traveling colleague knows nothing about yarn; the staff took more than an hour to help her find 'just right' purchases. In true Icelandic spirit, the staff reflect the kindness, courteousness, and helpful attitudes found all over Iceland.

There are other crafters in the nearby buildings which we did not see. Next time - - -

Although I purchased a lot of yarn and roving, I will return to Alafoss. It was just the personal experience I sought outside the main city. You won't be disappointed.
