What a lovely place - the rooms are huge, nicely equpped - no TV but there is Wifi. Really good food -you can table share if you want to - lovely bar for a drink - all with fabulous views of the river. Super staff to help too. There are walks you can do yourself with cheat notes in the various plants and trees or go with Gerry and really learn about NZ and its native species - he was so interesting - we even started bird watching! Plus there are kayaks to go out in the lake - which is like a mirror and utterly beautiful - yes its expensive but we budgeted a few cheaper motels before and after to justify the expense.

Room Tip: Room 5 to 10 are good

Pros: Great location and good food. A wonderful naturalist on staff.
Cons: Exceptionally expensive, very poor housekeeping, pretentious managers, no wi fi in rooms.

Thanks for your review. We are sorry that unlike most of our guests you did not enjoy every aspect of your stay with us. The acting managers were with us for only 3 months and departed in early December 2011.

Since then, Lodge founders/owners Anne Saunders and Gerry McSweeney have been the Resident Managers and Chief Guides at Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki. Guests have expressed to us their overwhelming delight with our Lodge facilities, our food, our guided adventures and the overall excellent value for money that we offer. We are pleased that you also enjoyed the food and our guided nature programme. Our rooms are superbly maintained and have the high 4 Star Plus Grading from the NZ quality assurance agency Qualmark.

We enjoyed every moment of our visit to this lodge. it is paradise! We felt like the only people on earth. Every detail of the lodge is thoughtfully maintained. The food was excellent and the team very attentive. There is a very special something at Lake Moeraki that is difficult to describe. The room was beautiful and overlooked the river. We ran the trail out to the beach, went kayaking and glowworm hunting with Michael. He is clearly passionate about Lake Moeraki and the perfect host! I only wish we stayed longer. It really is a piece of Heaven.

We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki for one night during our honeymoon in October 2011 and would definitely recommend this wonderful hideaway.

We arrived early afternoon and were greeted with coffee in the lounge before heading off on a self guided walk to the nearby beach (after taking advice on the best place to possibly see penguins... unfortunately no luck that day as the tide was too far in). We made sure to be back in time for the complimentary outing to go and feed the eels in the river feeding the lake, with Michael.

The other excursions that we particiated in were (free) kayaking in the lake before breakfast (what an amazing experience... a glass flat lake and a snow capped mountain) and we paid for a trip to another beach to spot the Fiordland crested penguin.

Michael is a fantastic guide - so knowledgable and easy to get along with. He was happy to wait as long as we could to try to spot a penguin and our patience was rewarded.

Back at the lodge, Janine and Geoff were very welcoming hosts, for whom nothing was too much trouble. The food was absolutely delicious.

This is not the sort of place to stay if you don't like the outdoors or want to sit in your room and watch tv - not least because there isn't one...! But for anyone who is interested in learning about the nature of this area of New Zealand, this is a place not to be missed.

To get the most out of the lodge, we would definitely recommend staying for at least 2 nights.

We spent four days at this beautiful location on the Moeraki River and Lake with outstanding views from our Riverside Suite #2. Rates include breakfast and dinner, both excellent, and two hikes per day, one in the early morning and the other in the late afternoon or evening. Fees for other daytime hikes depend on how many people participate. Our guide, Michael, has a degree in Ecology, and accompanied us on several hikes. He was extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of the area. Following a night of hard rain, we took a hike that involved crossing two swollen streams and Michael actually piggybacked us across them as they were too deep to walk across! The highlight of the hikes was seeing the Fiordland crested penguins coming and going from nest to ocean. Unforgettable experience. This is a very remote area with much outstanding natural beauty. We would definitely return here, especially if Michael is available to guide us.

Room Tip: Riverside Suites were close to dining area and had great views.

Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge was our favorite place while visiting the South Island. The view from the room was so relaxing and the food was honest to goodness the best we’ve ever had! Make sure you wear long (but light) clothing as you embark outside because sand flies are everywhere :) After dinner on the first evening, we took a nice walking tour with other guests to see glow worms along the mountainside. The next day, we chose the rain forest walk and the kayaking tour. We had a great time paddling and then searching for jade along the beach. We have so many wonderful memories from this rain forest and lodge. We HIGHLY recommend!

My wife and I spent two nites at the lodge and didn't want to leave. We stayed after two weeks of hectic vacationing and needed the R&R. Sarah and John (the hosts) were wonderful. We were upgraded to a river front room which was great. Spend the money to upgrade yourself if you can afford it and want some great R&R. Had a couple of big lounge chairs on the porch overlooking the river. We took advantage of all the included trips but none of the extras. The included trips were very nice and plenty for us. the weather was great so that helped. we took advantage of the included canoes and traveled up to the main lake. It was very enjoyable. Food was very good. It was an expensive two nites but for us it was exactly what we needed. I'd highly recommend it if you have the $$$$.
