The theater itself is beautiful. Even if you just stay outside it is quite something. If you go inside it is worth the time to take a little tour. We bought tickets to the kabuki show and although we enjoyed it as a whole we did think it was a bit too long. It lasted about 4 hours total including a few intermissions, but I think if they made it an hour less that would have been a lot better.

We were tired from sitting and watching the same drawn out act. I think it's just the style of kabuki to draw everything out so much. I would suggest doing just the one act ticket especially if you don't want to spend so much time on one thing. Those tickets were cheap and you line up right outside the entrance before the show starts. Otherwise you can buy tickets online for the whole show - it's pretty easy and then you use the kiosks there to print you're actual tickets. Everyone is very helpful if you don't know what to do.

I also recommend getting the closed caption device or audio translator otherwise you will not know what is going on. The costumes were amazing and they play the authentic instruments they used to play back in that era. I don't think you need to buy the most expensive seats either. Even the 3rd tier area has good views. Definitely don't buy the boxes on the second level right over the ramp they use as you won't be able to see anything. We found out the hard way and those seats were not cheap.

You don’t need a guide to visit here, just make a booking on-line or walk by. We walked by and paid 1,000 yen to see the last hour of a 3 act show. Each show has 3 acts and you can book each part separately or the whole lot. Our last hour cost 1,000 yen each. There is a good English (probably other languages as well) translator available (on a screen you hold) for 500 yen with a returnable 1,000 yen deposit which means you can follow the storyline instead of guessing it. Being in on the 3rd part didn’t really matter because it is really the theatrics that you are there to see allbeit with a Japanese twist to it. Wonderful cultural entertainment and I would recommend you sit in on one Act and if you like it stay for more!

I didn't really know what to expect, but I generally enjoy musical theater and opera so I had high hopes for Kabuki Theater. We'd been told that it's ok to leave early and that you don't need to stay through all the acts. We stayed through it's entirety, I think four different acts. Each one was so different and strangely hard to walk away from. We went to a daytime showing and everyone seemed to know to bring their own bento boxes. So unique and unusual. Glad we did this.

Despite some trepidation (having never seen kabuki before), we ordered tickets for a full matinee performance and thoroughly enjoyed every act. What an incredible experience!

I will admit that I splurged for box seats. Having tea provided and being able to use a table to eat our bento boxes certainly added to our enjoyment of the show. I chose box seats on the west side, closer to the hanamichi (the walkway stage). While this resulted in us occasionally seeing a performer's back and/or being briefly blinded by a spotlight, it was great to be so close to this feature.

I highly recommend renting the subtitle device because it can be difficult to interpret what's going on otherwise.

A complete surprise, I wandered into the Kabukiza Theater in search of the teahouse it contains, and ended up enraptured. I opted for the museum tour w/ English audio + 3-minute performance, which gives a remarkably good introduction to, as well as an appreciation for the form and what I was about to see, and found the 3-minute viewing tantalizingly brief. Tip: Tickets for single acts are available on a daily basis.
