We loved our three night stay at JR Kyushu Hotel Kokura. The English speaking staff were welcoming, warm, kind, and helpful. It was a great introduction to Japan!
Our room was spotless and equipped with nice amenities (hair brush, razor, toothbrush, and so on). Room was quiet despite the proximity to busy railroad main lines. Bed was fantastic. We slept well each night. And the breakfast (free) was good, filling, and surprisingly varied. It's available between 7 and 9 a.m.
A note about the location: JR Kyushu Hotel Kokura is only a one or two minute walk to the north entrance of the JR Kokura station. As a result, this hotel makes a great base for day trips, particularly for those who have a Rail Pass and want to explore Kyushu by rail. The JR Hakata station in Fukuoka, for example, is over 40 miles away, but it is only a 16 minute (!!) ride from Kokura on the Shinkansen trains. And JR Kyushu runs some really interesting and fun trains besides the Shinkansens, check out their website.
