I visited this museum on a joint ticket with Osaka Castle (I went to the museum first followed by the castle). The staff were polite. The sections on ancient/medieval/early modern history were the best. However, the content from the Meiji Era onwards was less compelling/insightful.

This museum is worth a visit if you are going to Osaka Castle on the same day but I would not make a special trek to visit only the museum.

Several floors with a lot of information about the history of Japan. They even had a sumo exhibit. Worth a quick visit if you are in the area

The Osaka Museum of History is located about a 10 minute walk from the Castle, and is very accessible by subway. Buying a combined ticket with the Castle, I first started at the museum. The museum itself is slightly disappointing, and having been to numerous museums in Japan, is definitely one I won't be returning to. Firstly, the exhibition itself isn't particularly structured and there isn't really a sense of continuance; rather just a bunch of artefacts bundled together randomly. This is very unlike the Tokyo-Edo museum, where you feel immersed and part of the story in the evolution of Edo into Tokyo. Furthermore, the exhibition is not english friendly at all, with English signs comprising of one sentence compared to paragraphs of Japanese, which makes it difficult to understand and process any information about the changing nature of Osaka. Unfortunately, the museum is very unemotive and worth avoiding, although Osaka Castle itself is extraordinary and an amazing museum.

We went here on our last day in Osaka because we had a late flight. So we want an activity with air conditioning. It is a short walk from the nearest subway. The museum has a striking museum and shares a spherical lobby with the adjacent NHK building. I don't think that NHK offers tours. There is a concert hall in the NHK part of the building. For the museum, you start on the 10th floor and work your way down. Only some of the displays have English. Even so, we enjoyed ourselves. The exhibits were well done. There are bathrooms on each floor, and plenty of seating. Seating is a rarity in Japanese public spaces. There are splendid views of Osaka Castle as well as other parts of Osaka. Next the building is the Osaka police headquarters, another striking building. Highly recommended half day trip that will keep you cool also. There is also a restaurant in the building.
